Position Summary

A Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) works under the supervision of a licensed Occupational Therapist (OT) to provide therapeutic services that help patients develop, recover, and improve daily living and functional skills. COTAs assist patients with physical, developmental, emotional, and cognitive challenges in a variety of healthcare settings including rehabilitation centers, hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, schools, and outpatient clinics.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist Occupational Therapists in implementing individualized treatment plans
  • Provide therapeutic activities and exercises to improve patients’ functional abilities
  • Help patients develop skills for daily living activities such as dressing, bathing, eating, and mobility
  • Monitor and document patient progress and responses to treatment
  • Educate patients and caregivers on therapy techniques, adaptive equipment, and home exercise programs
  • Prepare treatment areas and maintain therapy equipment
  • Communicate patient progress and concerns to supervising Occupational Therapist
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation according to facility and regulatory standards
  • Ensure patient safety during therapy sessions
  • Support discharge planning and continuity of care
Required Qualifications
  • Associate degree from an accredited Occupational Therapy Assistant program
  • Current Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) certification
  • Current state licensure or eligibility to obtain licensure
  • Current BLS (Basic Life Support) certification
  • Knowledge of occupational therapy practices, rehabilitation techniques, and patient care standards
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively with healthcare teams and patients
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience in rehabilitation, acute care, skilled nursing, outpatient therapy, pediatrics, or home health
  • Experience with electronic medical records (EMR/EHR) systems
  • Experience working with geriatric, pediatric, neurological, or behavioral health patient populations
  • Knowledge of adaptive equipment and assistive technologies
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, lift, and assist patients throughout the workday
  • Ability to lift and transfer patients safely
  • Ability to perform repetitive physical activities and therapy interventions
  • Manual dexterity and physical stamina required
