Unit Overview

Mercy Medical Center Redding's Family Birth Center is a larger L&D unit with:

• 19 Mother-Baby/Postpartum beds
• 12 L&D beds
• 2 ORs
• 1 PACU
• Level III NICU
• Handles both low- and high-risk deliveries
• OB laborist in-house 24/7
• RT 24/7
• Pharmacy 24/7

This is a higher-acuity L&D environment than a typical community birthing center because they handle high-risk deliveries and have a Level III NICU.

BIG REQUIREMENT

Must have 2 years of L&D Charge Nurse OR L&D Nurse Manager experience.

That's the biggest screening requirement I'd qualify before submitting someone.

Patient Ratios

• 1:4 to 1:1, following California staffing ratios
• Ratios depend on patient acuity/stage of labor

Certifications Required

• BLS
• ACLS
• NRP
• AWHONN Advanced Fetal Monitoring
• COVID vaccination required

Dysrhythmia Test

Telemetry, L&D, Emergency, and Critical Care RNs will take an onsite proctored dysrhythmia test on Day 1.

⚠️ PASS/FAIL

Floating

This is a First-to-Float position.

Potential floating includes:

Peds:

• Would take the same type of patients they normally care for on Postpartum, including couplets.

NICU:

• May take feeders/growers only if the nurse has previous experience with them.

Circulating

Circulating experience is NOT required.

• They have staff available to circulate.
• If the traveler has circulating experience, orientation is approximately 3 shifts.
• Otherwise, orientation is approximately 2 shifts.

Patient Population

The unit handles:

• Low-risk deliveries
• High-risk deliveries
• Postpartum/mother-baby
• Patients requiring higher-acuity obstetric care
• Newborns associated with high-risk deliveries

Babies with known congenital defects requiring immediate surgery are transferred to another facility.

Weekend Requirement

3 weekend shifts every 4-week schedule

For nights:

• Friday night
• Saturday night

Days are Saturday/Sunday.

Holidays

Travelers participate in the permanent staff holiday rotation.

Other Unit Details

• Scrubs provided by hospital
• No traditional telemetry
• Phillips system used for fetal heart monitoring
• No vents
• No IV team
• Nurse aides: No
• OB techs assist with scrubbing and desk coverage
• OB physician/laborist in-house 24/7

Cancellation

Hospital can cancel up to:

• 4 shifts on a 13-week assignment
• 3 shifts if assignment is under 13 weeks
