Job Description
- Provide safe, compassionate nursing care to patients recovering from anesthesia and surgical procedures.
- Monitor patients closely during the post-anesthesia recovery period, including vital signs, airway status, level of consciousness, pain, and overall condition.
- Assess patients for potential complications and respond promptly to changes in clinical status.
- Administer medications, IV therapies, and other treatments according to provider orders and facility protocols.
- Manage postoperative pain and nausea while promoting safe and comfortable recovery.
- Perform thorough patient assessments before, during, and after PACU recovery.
- Collaborate with surgeons, anesthesiologists, CRNAs, physicians, and other members of the perioperative care team.
- Provide postoperative education to patients and families regarding recovery, medications, wound care, and discharge instructions.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the electronic medical record.
- Follow infection prevention, patient safety, medication administration, and hospital policies.
- Demonstrate strong clinical judgment, communication, critical thinking, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced perioperative environment.
- Support a positive patient experience and contribute to a collaborative surgical services team.
Education Requirements
- Graduate of an accredited nursing program.
- Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) required; Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
- Current knowledge of PACU, perioperative, post-anesthesia, and acute-care nursing practices.
License and Certification Requirements
- Active Registered Nurse license eligible for practice in New Mexico.
- BLS certification required.
- ACLS certification required.
- PALS certification preferred.
- NRP certification may be preferred depending on facility requirements.
- Additional facility-specific certifications or competencies may be required.
Experience Requirements
- Recent PACU / Post Anesthesia Care Unit experience required.
- Previous acute-care or perioperative nursing experience strongly preferred.
- Experience caring for patients recovering from anesthesia and surgical procedures.
- Strong assessment, prioritization, medication administration, and emergency-response skills.
- Previous experience with electronic medical records preferred.
