Description:
The Cat Scan Technologist performs computer tomography procedures and related techniques.
They produce sectional and three-dimensional images for interpretation and assist with interventional and therapeutic procedures.
Essential functions include performing complex CT procedures.
Using professional judgment when reviewing and obtaining patients’ clinical history for procedures is critical.
It is essential to ensure information is documented and scanned into the electronic records.
The technologist prepares, screens, and reviews the accuracy of the contrast questionnaire with the patient and/or family member.
They identify and/or administer contrast media related to CT exams as prescribed by a licensed practitioner.
It is important to validate the patient prescription to verify the appropriateness of the exam.
If incorrect, they communicate with the Radiologist and Referring Physician for additional clinical information or a new prescription.
The role includes calling physicians to clarify the prescription according to the appropriate CT protocols.
Additionally, the technologist verifies insurance authorized exam scripts and sends necessary forms for insurance re-verification.
They are responsible for obtaining outside studies and scheduling them to ensure availability for comparison by Radiologists.
The responsibility also includes providing exam copies to patients and requesting physicians or family members.
Evaluating radiographs using the electronic records system ensures that they contain proper identification and are of diagnostic value.
Consistent and appropriate techniques are required to gather relevant information for patient safety and protocol preparation.
Determining patient preparedness for procedures is also part of the role.
The technologist preps patients for scanning, which may involve shielding and the use of immobilization devices.
They determine the appropriate type and dose of contrast to be administered.
Providing accurate explanations and instructions at appropriate times is essential for patient understanding.
The technologist addresses and documents patient questions and concerns regarding the procedure when appropriate.
Performing venipuncture and IV maintenance procedures according to established guidelines is a requirement of the job.
Monitoring patients’ physical conditions for adverse reactions during procedures is also critical.
Scheduled shifts include the necessity to work weekends and holidays.
An understanding of the needs of the patient population served is vital.
Care delivery must be specific to those needs, including age, culture, language, and physical impairments.
Communicating effectively with patients and caregivers at their level is essential.
Adhering to the organizational competencies and standards of behavior is expected.
Standing for a minimum of 6 hours a day and lifting up to 25 lbs., as well as pushing and pulling up to 50 lbs., is required.
Maintaining CEU credits and achieving ARRT (CT) certification within one year of hire is necessary.
Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification from the American Heart Association must be obtained within three months of hire.
Preferred qualifications include six months of CT experience and knowledge of electronic health record systems.
