Job Title: Cytogenetic Technologist Profession: Cytogenetic Technologist Specialty: - Duration: Full-Time Shift: Day Hours per Shift: Sunday - 8:00am - 5:30pm, Monday - Wednesday 10:30am - 9:00pm Experience: Clinical working experience in chromosome analysis for bloods or bone marrows is preferred. License: CG(ASCP) required Certifications: - Must-Have: Previous FISH Analysis, Chromosome Analysis (blood and bone marrow) and Cytogenetics Wet Bench Setup experience preferred. Description: Performs sample setup, harvesting, slide preparation, and staining. Executes microscopic analysis, photography, and karyotyping. Performs FISH analysis efficiently. Assures the integrity of specimens during all phases of processing. Conducts a variety of culturing procedures, including establishing blood, bone marrow, and biopsy cultures. Monitors growth levels, making decisions regarding feeding, subculturing, and harvesting. Performs various slide preparations and staining techniques, such as standard Giemsa, Q-, R-, C-banding, and NOR staining. Conducts detailed microscopic analysis. Assumes responsibility for ruling out chromosomal mosaicism. Makes decisions regarding optimal cells for documentation. Operates automated karyotyping equipment. Performs FISH processing and analysis accurately. Manages record keeping and maintains stock supply levels. Orients new personnel in the laboratory. Institutes new procedures and continues education programs. May apply cryogenic technology in specimen storage. Coordinates specific functions with laboratory personnel in accordance with job description. Manages quality control of culture apparatus, including monitoring CO2 levels in incubators and periodic maintenance of hoods. Stays knowledgeable about research and development within the cytogenetics field. Performs validation studies for new test development as required. Participates in the compilation of validation data. Reports any problems that might adversely affect patient care to supervisory personnel. Utilizes effective data management skills. Works in an area that contains biohazardous materials along with chemical, fire, and mechanical hazards. Each employee has the responsibility to work in a safe manner. May be required to stoop, reach, and lift up to 50 pounds. Education: Bachelor's degree in any Life Science, Medical Laboratory Scientist (ASCP or equivalent), and/or Technologist in Cytogenetics (ASCP or equivalent) required.
