    Description

    Job Title: Cytogenetic Technologist Profession: Cytogenetic Technologist Specialty: - Duration: - Shift: Day Hours per Shift: Sun - 8:00am - 5:30pm, Mon - Wed 10:30am - 9:00pm Experience: Previous clinical working experience in chromosome analysis for blood or bone marrows preferred. License: CG(ASCP) required Certifications: - Must-Have: - Previous FISH Analysis - Chromosome Analysis (blood and bone marrow) - Cytogenetics Wet Bench Setup experience preferred Description: Performs sample set up, harvesting, slide preparation, and staining. Conducts microscopic analysis, photography, and karyotyping. Performs FISH analysis. Assures integrity of the specimens during all phases of processing. Executes a variety of culturing procedures including establishing blood, bone marrow, and biopsy cultures. Monitors growth levels and makes decisions regarding feeding, subculturing, and harvesting. Performs various slide preparations and staining techniques, including standard Giemsa, Q-, R-, C-banding, and NOR staining. Conducts detailed microscopic analyses. Takes responsibility for ruling out chromosomal mosaicism. Makes decisions regarding optimal cells for documentation. Capable of operating automated karyotyping equipment. Performs FISH processing and analysis. Manages record keeping and maintains stock supply levels. Orients new personnel in the lab and institutes new procedures. Participates in continuing education programs. May apply cryogenic technology in specimen storage. Coordinates specific functions with laboratory personnel in accordance with job description. Manages quality control of culture apparatus. Monitors CO2 levels in incubators and supplies. Carries out periodic disinfection of incubators and maintenance of hoods. Monitors liquid N2 levels. Stays knowledgeable about research and development in the cytogenetics field. Performs validation studies for new test development as required. Participates in the compilation of validation data. Reports problems that might adversely affect patient care to supervisory personnel. Utilizes effective LIS and equipment data management skills. May be required to stoop, reach, and lift up to 50 pounds. Works in an area that contains biohazardous materials, along with chemical, fire, and mechanical hazards.
