Emergency Room Registered Nurse (RN)

Unit Information

Location: Salem, VA

• Number of Beds: 27
• Number of Staff: 50 RNs and 25 Medics
• Patient Ratios: 4-6:1

Staffing Information

Shift Details:

• Day Shift: 1 Charge RN, 5 RNs, 2-3 Medics; increases to 9-10 RNs by 11 AM and 6-7 RNs by 3 PM
• Night Shift: 1 Charge RN, 5 RNs, 2-3 Medics

Qualifications

To be considered for this position, candidates must meet the following criteria:

• Required:
  • Completion of 2-3 travel assignments
  • 2-3 years of Emergency Room experience
• Preferred:
  • Experience in high-acuity, fast-paced Emergency Rooms
  • Background in managing patient ratios of 5:1

Core Responsibilities

Typical procedures performed include:

• Rapid Sequence Intubation (RSI)
• Sepsis interventions
• Stroke protocols including tPA administration
• Central line placement
• Caring for psychiatric patients
• Patient transfers to other facilities under EMTALA guidelines

Required Certifications

• BLS (Basic Life Support)
• ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
• PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
• TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) preferred
• ENPC (Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course) preferred
• NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) preferred
• NIH Stroke Scale certification preferred

Scheduling Requirements

Weekend shifts are required, with rotations including:

• Four weekend shifts within a four-week scheduling period (Friday or Saturday nights; Saturday or Sunday days)

Dress Code

Scrub colors: Navy blue or white.
