General Information

This facility sees an average of 150-180 patients daily and consists of a main Emergency Department (ED) with 33 beds, including:

• 8 beds designated for Trauma/Resuscitation
• A pod with 4 Behavioral Health rooms (which can be converted to Medical)
• 5 pods divided into 4 rooms and a hall bed

There is also a vertical care area that functions as a waiting room and holding area to begin patient care, serving ESI 3 and ESI 4 patients. It may also be utilized as a higher acuity pod depending on the ED flow.

Minimum Experience Required

• Registered Nurse (RN): 2 years of Emergency Department experience (excluding travel experience preferred). Candidates with 1.5 years of ED experience and 2 years outside of ED may be considered with manager approval.
• Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN): 2 years of LPN experience in any acute care setting is required. Candidates with 1.5 years of ED experience may be considered with manager approval.

Patient Types

The unit cares for a diverse patient population, from neonates to geriatric patients, including:

• Minor to critical cases
• Heavy trauma cases (Level 2 trauma center)
• Complete stroke care for patients exhibiting symptoms
• Behavioral Health patients, with responsibilities for evidence collection in sexual assault cases
• Pediatric Intensive Care Unit patients
• Cardiac patients, with access to a catheter lab

Patient Ratios

• Registered Nurse (RN): 1:4-5
• Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN): 1:4-5
• ED Technician: 1:10

Required Certifications

• Registered Nurse (RN): BLS, ACLS, NIHSS, TNCC, and PALS are required (CPI or MAB/MOAB preferred).
• Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN): BLS, ACLS, NIHSS, and PALS are required (CPI or MAB/MOAB preferred).

Required Education

Completion of a nursing education program accredited by the appropriate board of nursing is mandatory. Registered Nurses must be licensed in South Dakota.

Skills Required for RN

• Experience managing patients across the described demographics
• Proficiency in ESI assessments during triage
• Ability to prioritize care based on patient needs, using critical thinking and effective communication
• Eligible ICU RNs may be offered to float to the ED; PCU RNs may float to ICU as needed.

• EPIC charting system (experience preferred)

Floating Opportunities

Registered Nurses may float to Med/Surg, PCU, or ICU areas as a task nurse, not taking on full assignments.

Orientation Details

• 8 hours of general facility orientation
• 4 hours of ED-specific education
• A minimum of two 12-hour shifts in the unit; travelers contracted for 48 hours per week will receive at least three 12-hour shifts.
