Emergency Department Registered Nurse (RN)

General Information

Location: Tacoma, WA

Facility Type: Level II Trauma Center, Level IV NICU

Bed Capacity: 60 (including 21 Inpatient Holding Beds, 2 Psychiatric Rooms, and 14 Hall Spaces)

Average Daily Patient Volume: 140-150 patients

Position Overview

This position requires a Registered Nurse with a minimum of one year of strong experience in the Emergency Department. The successful candidate will have experience handling high-acuity patients across a diverse age range, from pediatrics to geriatrics.

Patient Ratios

The typical nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:4. This may flex to 1:5 for lower acuity patients.

Required Certifications

• BLS (Basic Life Support)
• ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
• PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
• TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course)
• NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
• CPI/MOAB (Crisis Prevention Institute/Management of Actual or Potential Aggression)
• Traveler Competency Exam

Required Skills

• General Emergency Department experience
• Cardiac rhythm interpretation
• IV skills
• Knowledge of medication administration, including drips
• Experience with procedural sedation
• Blood administration
• Administration of cardiac medications

Support on the Unit

• Emergency Room Technicians for glucose checks and assistance with splinting
• Charge Nurse available (rarely takes an assignment)
• Resource/Float Nurses as per staffing needs
• Respiratory Therapy available 24/7
• ED Educator support
• Security personnel present 24/7
• House Supervisor available 24/7
• Pharmacy support available around the clock, assisting in codes

Charting System/Equipment

• Electronic Medical Records: Epic
• IV Pumps: Alaris
• Medication Dispensing System: Pyxis
• Central and Bedside Telemetry Monitoring at the Nursing Station

Orientation

• First day includes NEO (badge issuance, Epic training if required) and a meeting with the educator
• 3-4, 12-hour shifts with a preceptor on assigned shifts
• Traveler Telemetry Competency must be completed and passed prior to starting

Scheduling

• Shift options available:
• • Days: 0700-1900, 0900-2100
  • Mids: 1100-2300, 1300-0100
  • Eve/Night: 1500-0300, 1900-0700
• Shift rotations may occur during the contract but will remain the same for 6-week blocks
• Weekend rotation is required every other weekend
• Time off may be approved for up to 5 days
