Emergency Department Registered Nurse (ED RN) – Madison, Wisconsin Travel Nursing Contract

  • Shifts: 3 shifts per week; 12-hour evening or night shifts, typically 3:00 p.m.–3:30 a.m. or 7:00 p.m.–7:30 a.m.
  • Patient Ratio: Approximately 1:4
  • Patient Population: Neonates, infants, children, adolescents, adults, and geriatric patients
  • Weekend Coverage: Weekend and holiday rotation required
  • Emergency Department Setting: High-acuity emergency department with Level I trauma, comprehensive stroke, and comprehensive cardiac capabilities
  • Floating: May be required to support another emergency department location within the health system

Emergency Room RN Job Requirements

  • Active Wisconsin RN license or compact RN license
  • At least 2 years of Emergency Department nursing experience with both adult and pediatric populations within the last 3 years
  • Previous travel nursing experience required
  • Epic electronic health record charting experience required
  • ACLS, BLS, and PALS certifications through the American Heart Association
  • TNCC certification
  • Trauma Level II experience required; Trauma Level I experience preferred
  • Previous charge nurse experience preferred
  • Ability to care for patients with critical, traumatic, cardiac, neurologic, psychiatric, respiratory, and multisystem conditions
  • Successful completion of a telemetry assessment before the start of the assignment. Passing standards include a minimum score of 80%, accurate recognition of lethal rhythms, and demonstrated knowledge of third-degree heart blocks.
  • Travel nurses must reside more than 50 miles from the assignment location to be eligible.

Emergency Department Nursing Responsibilities

  • Provide emergency nursing care to patients across the lifespan, from neonates through geriatrics.
  • Rapidly assess, triage, stabilize, and monitor patients with urgent and life-threatening conditions.
  • Manage complex emergencies including trauma, stroke, STEMI, respiratory failure, sepsis, burns, overdose, behavioral health crises, and multisystem organ dysfunction.
  • Administer emergency medications, blood products, procedural sedation, IV therapies, vasopressors, and continuous sedation or paralytic infusions as indicated.
  • Perform and support advanced emergency procedures, including airway management, intubation, central line care, chest tube management, arterial line monitoring, and 12-lead ECG acquisition.
  • Interpret cardiac rhythms and report changes promptly to the medical team.
  • Collaborate with physicians, advanced practice providers, respiratory therapy, radiology, pharmacy, social services, rapid response teams, and other interdisciplinary partners.
  • Accurately document assessments, interventions, reassessments, and outcomes in Epic.
  • Support safe patient flow, handoffs, transfers, and discharge planning in a busy emergency setting.
  • Float as needed and maintain flexibility for evening, night, weekend, and holiday coverage.
