General Information

The organization sees between 150 to 180 patients daily and operates a main emergency department (ED) with 33 beds, including:

• 8 beds dedicated to Trauma/Resuscitation
• 1 pod with 4 Behavioral Health rooms (capable of converting to Medical)
• 5 pods, each consisting of 4 rooms and a hall bed

There is also a vertical care area that serves as a waiting or holding area and may be utilized for patients categorized as ESI (Emergency Severity Index) 3 and 4.

Patient Types

The ED caters to a wide range of patients, including:

• Neonates to geriatrics
• Patients with minor to critical conditions, including sepsis, DKA, respiratory illnesses, gastrointestinal bleeds, and trauma
• A significant volume of trauma cases, including stab wounds, gunshot wounds, motor vehicle collisions, drownings, and falls
• Individuals presenting with signs and symptoms of stroke
• Pediatric patients requiring intensive care

Travelers may also be tasked with managing sexual assault cases, including evidence collection, under the guidance of a dedicated Quality Coordinator.

Patient Ratios

• RN: 1:4-5
• LPN: 1:4-5
• ED Tech: 1:10

Required Certifications

Candidates must possess the following certifications:

• Registered Nurse: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS, TNCC, and PALS (CPI or MAB/MOAB preferred)
• Licensed Practical Nurse: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS, and PALS (CPI or MAB/MOAB preferred)

Required Education

Completion of a nursing education program approved by the state Board of Nursing is necessary for Registered Nurses.

Skills Required

For Registered Nurses:

• Experience with a diverse patient population
• Proficiency in ESI assessments and prioritization of patient care
• Ability to utilize critical thinking, effective communication, and teamwork in a dynamic setting

For Licensed Practical Nurses:

• Focus primarily on behavioral health patients
• Support within the ED and potential task assistance in inpatient areas

Support on the Unit

The ED includes:

• ED Technicians
• A Lead Technician
• 24/7 physician and hospitalist coverage
• Radiology and Phlebotomy services
• Security personnel on the unit

Charting System and Equipment

The unit utilizes the EPIC charting system, along with various medical equipment including Omnicell and Alaris systems.

Orientation and Training

New hires will undergo:

• 8 hours of general facility orientation
• 4 hours of ED-specific training and a minimum of 2 shifts in the unit

Scheduling and Availability

The ED schedules variable shifts to accommodate operational needs, including:

• Morning, afternoon, and overnight shifts
• Weekend work may be required based on staffing needs

Additional Information

Time off requests are subject to managerial approval. Specific blackout periods apply, particularly during high-traffic events.
