Unit Information

This position is a Float Pool role, requiring flexibility to float within the designated scope of practice across various units in the hospital, including PCU, Telemetry, Medical-Surgical, and ED Holding. Additionally, the nurse may float to an affiliated facility for patient care as needed.

Minimum Experience

1 year minimum experience is required. First-time travelers are welcome to apply, provided they have strong experience in PCU/Telemetry and previous float pool experience.

Patient Types and Common Diagnoses

The majority of shifts will take place in the ED Holding area, with floating to inpatient PCU as necessary. Patient types include:

• Neuro, Trauma, Surgical, Medical
• Respiratory compromise, sepsis, renal failure, bleeding disorders
• Chronic conditions including CHF, COPD, pneumonia, and strokes
• Cardiac Stepdown and Cardiac Short Stay patients

Patient Ratios

• PCU: 1:4
• Medical-Surgical: 1:5-6

Required Licenses and Certifications

• BLS (Basic Life Support)
• ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
• NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale certification)

Skills Required

• IV Medication Titration
• Cardiac Rhythm Interpretation
• BIPAP Management
• Ostomy and General Drains Management
• Chest Tubes and Lumbar Drains
• Experience with TR Bands is preferred
• Experience with EPIC EMR is required

Department Support

Support within the department includes:

• CNA assistance
• Charge RN without patient assignment
• Hospitalist available 24/7
• Respiratory Therapists available 24/7
• Specialty physicians on call 24/7

Technology and Equipment

• EMR: EPIC (required)
• IV Pump: Alaris
• Medication Dispensing: Pyxis

Orientation

• 1-day general hospital orientation
• 1 day of unit-specific orientation (12 hours) on the PCU unit
• Competency in Telemetry is required prior to starting

Scheduling

• Weekend rotation: every other weekend, with potential for some back-to-back weekends
• RTO (Requests for Time Off): Allowed up to 5 days
• Shift times: 0700-1930 or 1900-0730
• Schedule cycles are created in 3-week increments, with notification provided 7-10 days in advance
• No self-scheduling or guaranteed patterned schedule

• Scrubs: Any solid color, professional attire
• Free parking available in the parking garage
• Documentation practices include hourly rounding and bedside report
• Medication management protocols must be followed, including two-nurse verification for wasting controlled substances
• Document pain assessments before and after administration of pain medications
• Breaks are required and should be taken as scheduled
