Description

American Traveler is hiring an experienced ICU RN for a Whole House Float position covering ICU, PCU, and MS units at a Level I Trauma teaching hospital, requiring 2+ years of ICU experience.

Details

  • Whole House Float position covering ICU, PCU, and MS units
  • Night shift, 3x12 hours, 6:45 PM to 7:15 AM
  • EPIC charting system experience required
  • Floating required every 4 hours as staffing needs are reassessed, up to 2-3 times per shift
  • Patient ratios: ICU 2:1, PCU 5:1, MS 6:1 (may flex to 7:1)
  • Weekend requirement of every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts within a 6-week block
  • Must work at least one holiday per 13-week contract, with two holidays required during winter holiday periods

Requirements

  • Active Virginia State or Compact RN license required (single-state license accepted only if from a non-compact state)
  • BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS certifications required; CPI certification preferred
  • Minimum 2 years of ICU experience in a large Level I or II trauma facility required
  • Experience with 1:5 or higher patient ratios across ICU, PCU, and MS units required
  • Skilled in IV therapy, phlebotomy, PICC line management, central line care, and arterial line management
  • Experience with blood product administration, trach management, and non-invasive airway support (nasal cannula, CPAP/BiPAP)
  • Proficient in ventilator management, chest tube care (Emerson/PleurEvac), and cardiac monitoring
  • Experience with continuous IV sedation, emergency medications, and titrating cardiac and vasoactive drips
  • Teaching hospital and Level I Trauma experience preferred
  • Charge nurse experience preferred

Additional Information

  • Provide comprehensive ICU-level care while floating across ICU, PCU, and MS units based on facility needs
  • Work at a 703-bed acute care teaching hospital and the region's only Level I Trauma Center for adults and pediatrics
  • Facility is Magnet-designated for nursing excellence and affiliated with Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine
  • Facility may call off up to 1 shift per 2 weeks
  • All RTO and scheduling requests must be submitted in advance
  • First-time travelers are welcome to apply
  • Local candidates are not accepted; candidates residing within 100 miles of the facility (based on driver's license address) are considered local
  • Candidates residing 50-99.9 miles from the facility may be eligible for one 13-week assignment with no extension eligibility
  • Candidates residing less than 50 miles from the facility may be eligible for one 13-week assignment at a lower bill rate with no extension eligibility
  • Previous employees (per diem or permanent) must have a minimum one-year separation before returning as a traveler
  • Travelers who have worked 365 days at this facility are not eligible to return, with exceptions reviewed case-by-case by facility leadership
