General Information

We are seeking an experienced ICU Registered Nurse (RN) to join our team. Our ICU is a mixed unit comprising 39 beds, including MICU, SICU, CICU, and TICU. The unit is divided into pods, and floating to the CVICU side is restricted to nurses with specialty experience.

Experience Requirements

• A minimum of 2 years of ICU experience, excluding travel experience, is preferred.
• If the candidate has 1.5 years of ICU experience (excluding travel) and significant RN experience outside of ICU, management team approval is required.
• First-time travelers will not be accepted; candidates must have at least one prior travel assignment.
• Travelers must reside more than 100 miles away from any facility location.

Patient Types

The ICU will care for complex patients, including:

• Surgical
• Medical
• Cardiac (preferred)
• Neuro
• Trauma

Common diagnoses include ARDS, MI, CVA/TIA, COVID, post-cardiac catheterization, post-surgical care, and multiple system trauma, including a heavy trauma population.

Required Certifications

• BLS
• ACLS
• NIHSS
• TNCC (this certification is mandatory before arrival)

Required Education

Candidates must have completed a nursing education program approved by a board of nursing and possess a valid Registered Nurse (RN) license.

Skills and Qualifications

• Proficiency with Epic electronic medical records system is required.
• Comfortable working a 48-hour work week.
• Experience managing critical care patients, including handling IV medications (vasopressors, sedation, paralytics), hemodynamic monitoring, proning, ventilator management, telemetry, and demonstrating strong critical thinking and assessment skills.
• Experience with Impella, IABP, and CRRT is strongly preferred.

During the interview process, candidates should be prepared to describe a situation where they exceeded a leader’s expectations.

Unit Support

• CNA: 1-2 Nurse Aides per unit, along with a mobility float aide.
• Charge nurse: 2 Clinical Registered Nurses oversee all ICUs.
• Phlebotomy services available for peripheral blood draws only.
• IV/VAT Team: All midline placements are performed by ICU Clinical Registered Nurses.
• Resource Nurses available, staffing dependent.
• Respiratory Therapy: Available 24/7.
• Physician coverage includes 3 Intensivists during the day and 2 at night, along with Advanced Practice Providers at night.

Orientation and Scheduling

Orientation includes:

• 8-hour initial hospital orientation.
• 4-hour department orientation including iLearns.
• Two 12-hour shifts of floor orientation followed by one additional 12-hour independent shift for travelers on a 48-hour contract.

Weekend rotations are encouraged but cannot be guaranteed, and there will be no requests for time off during holidays or the Sturgis Bike Rally in August.

Other Notes

Candidates may also be expected to precept nursing students. Scrub colors are navy, and free parking is provided.
