General Information

This role involves working in a mixed ICU unit with a total of 39 beds, including MICU, SICU, CICU, and TICU. The unit is organized into pods, and floating to the CVICU is reserved for those with experience in that specialty.

Experience Requirements

• Minimum 2 years of ICU experience, excluding travel experience
• If a candidate has 1.5 years of ICU experience and significant RN experience outside of ICU, approval may be sought from the management team.
• First-time travelers will not be accepted. A minimum of one prior travel assignment is required.
• Travelers must reside at least 100 miles away from any associated facility.

Patient Types

The unit cares for complex ICU patients with varied needs, including but not limited to:

• Surgical
• Medical
• Cardiac (preferred)
• Neuro
• Trauma

Common diagnoses include:

• ARDS
• Myocardial Infarction (MI)
• Cerebrovascular Accident (CVA) / Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA)
• COVID
• Post-cardiac catheterization
• Post-surgical
• Multiple system trauma

Preferred Experience

Cardiac experience, specifically 24 to 48 hours post-operative experience with CABG/TAVR, is preferred but not required. Fresh open heart patients will not be accepted unless the candidate is experienced and the facility feels comfortable.

Patient Ratios

Patient-to-nurse ratios may be:

• 1:1
• 1:2
• 1:3 (rare, depending on acuity)

Required Certifications

• BLS
• ACLS
• NIHSS
• TNCC (required; travelers must obtain this certification prior to arrival)

Required Education

Candidates must have completed a nursing education program approved by a board of nursing and be a Registered Nurse (RN) licensed in South Dakota.

Skills Required

• Experience with Epic charting system (required)
• Comfortable working a 48-hour/week contract
• Experience with IV medications (vasopressors, sedation, paralytics)
• Experience managing hemodynamic lines, proning, and ventilators
• Strong critical thinking and assessment skills
• Able to work well in a team-oriented, fast-paced environment
• Experience with telemetry

Preferred Equipment Experience

• Impella
• IABP
• CRRT

Unit Support

• 1-2 Nurse Aides per unit + mobility float aide
• 2 Charge Nurses oversee all ICUs
• Phlebotomy services available (peripheral blood draws only)
• IV/VAT Team: ICU Charge Nurses place all midlines
• Resource Nurse available, staffing dependent
• Respiratory Therapy available 24/7
• 3 Intensivists on days, 2 on nights, with an APP on nights

Orientation and Scheduling

Orientation includes:

• 1 full day of hospital orientation
• 4 hours for online training (iLearns)
• 2 shifts of floor orientation (12 hours each)
• 1 additional independent shift for travelers from 48GH to meet required hours
