Labor and Delivery Registered Nurse (RN)

General Information

The Labor and Delivery unit consists of 10 labor and delivery beds, 4 OB ED triage beds, and 4 antepartum rooms. The unit provides comprehensive care for a wide range of pregnant patients, including high-risk cases.

Patient Types

• All types of pregnant patients, from high-risk to low-intervention laboring patients.
• Care for antepartum, OB triage, postpartum, and infants.
• Supported by the only Level 3 NICU within a 350-mile radius.

Patient Ratios

• Antepartum: 1:3
• Inactive Labor: 1:2
• Active Labor: 1:1
• Postpartum/Couplet Care: 1:3 couplets

Licenses and Certifications Required

• Required: BLS, NRP
• Preferred: ACLS, certification in inpatient obstetrics, electronic fetal monitoring, or inpatient antepartum.

Skills Required

• Competency in managing high-acuity labor patients, including those with preeclampsia, preterm labor, and antepartum care for patients less than 35 weeks gestation.
• IV starts, cervical checks, phlebotomy, magnesium sulfate administration, blood administration, insulin management, C-section circulation, and post-operative care.
• Ability to care for couplets and comfort in managing normal newborn nursery patients (Level I care).
• Preference for candidates with experience in lower acuity NICU patients (Level II care).

Education Required

Completion of a nursing education program approved by the board of nursing; must be a registered nurse (RN) in South Dakota.

• 4 days with a preceptor (3 days in Labor and Delivery and 1 day in Postpartum)

Scheduling

• Shift Times: 12-hour shifts (0630/1830), variable shifts required, including nights and days throughout the contract.
• Weekend Rotation: Every other weekend.
• Holiday Expectations: Flexibility to work holidays as needed.
• Approval of time off: Requires manager's approval.

Multiple locations within the region, primarily centered in South Dakota.
