Labor and Delivery Registered Nurse (LD RN)
Job Overview
This position is located at a Level II Trauma Center with advanced Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) services. The facility is equipped with a robust Labor and Delivery unit, handling a diverse range of high-acuity obstetric cases.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage labor and delivery of high-risk obstetric patients.
- Triage and assess obstetric patients effectively.
- Circulate in the operating room during surgical procedures.
- Conduct cervical checks and interpret fetal monitoring strips.
- Support the delivery room team by attending to normal newborns as needed.
- Ensure complete recovery and transition of both mother and baby following births.
Patient Types
Responsibilities will include caring for patients experiencing:
- Hypertension
- Magnesium administration
- C-sections (approximately 33% C-section rate)
- Preterm labor
- Insulin drips (occasionally, per protocol)
- Various delivery methods including vaginal deliveries and inductions
- High acuity antepartum and postpartum cases
- Multiple births and postpartum hemorrhage management
Patient Ratios
Staffing ratios are in accordance with AWHONN guidelines:
- 1:1 for active labor
- 1:2 for non-active laboring patients
- 1:2-3 for antepartum based on acuity
Qualifications
- Minimum of 2 years of nursing experience in Labor and Delivery; 5+ years preferred.
- Previous travel experience is preferred.
- Intermediate Fetal Monitoring certification (AWHONN) is required.
- BLS and NRP certifications are mandatory.
- Demonstrated experience in managing high acuity obstetric patients and charge nurse responsibilities.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to educate and assist in conflict resolution.
Support on the Unit
- CNA support for transports, restocking, and assisting in the operating room.
- Phlebotomy services available.
- Respiratory Therapy available 24/7 to assist with high-risk deliveries.
Orientation and Training
- Traditional orientation schedule with hospital training followed by unit-specific onboarding.
- Orientation includes CAP and unit training, with preceptorship by experienced staff.
Scheduling
- Weekend rotation is every other weekend with some variability based on unit needs.
- Shift times are typically 7:00 AM to 7:30 PM and 7:00 PM to 7:30 AM.
- The schedule is created in six-week cycles and will be released two weeks prior to the cycle start.
