Labor and Delivery Registered Nurse (RN)

General Information

This opportunity is located in South Dakota, with a 10-bed Labor & Delivery (L&D) unit, 4 OB ED triage beds, and 4 antepartum rooms. The facility features the only Level 3 NICU within a 350-mile radius, providing care for a comprehensive range of patients, including high-risk cases.

Patient Types

The L&D unit serves a variety of pregnant patients, handling cases from low-intervention laboring patients to those with significant risk factors or complications. Services include antepartum care, OB triage/ED, postpartum, and infant care.

Patient Ratios

• Antepartum: 1:3
• Inactive Labor: 1:2
• Active Labor: 1:1
• Postpartum/Couplet Care: 1:3 couplets

Requirements

• Licensure: Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in South Dakota.
• Certifications:
  • Required: BLS, NRP
  • Preferred: ACLS, certification in inpatient obstetrics, electronic fetal monitoring, or inpatient antepartum
• Experience:
  • At least 2 years of Labor & Delivery experience, preferably in a Level 3 facility.
  • First-time travelers are welcome.
• Skills:
  • Experience with EPIC charting, managing high acuity labor patients, and must be capable of IV starts, cervical checks, phlebotomy, magnesium sulfate, blood administration, insulin administration, circulating for C-sections, and C-section recovery care.
  • Must be comfortable caring for couplets and normal newborn nursery patients (Level I care).
  • Preference for candidates with Level II NICU experience.

Unit Support

The unit is supported by a secretary, scrub tech, charge nurse, VAT team, respiratory therapy available 24/7, OB physician team, and anesthesia/CRNA.

Orientation

New staff will undergo 4 days of orientation, which includes 3 days in L&D and 1 day in postpartum care.

Scheduling

• Shifts: 12-hour shifts (0630/1830), with variable shift assignments.
• Availability to work nights/days throughout the contract is required.
• Weekend rotation: every other weekend.
• Holiday assignments as needed; time off requests are subject to manager approval.

Additional Information

Candidates may be required to float to postpartum/couplet care during their contract duration.
