Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced travel RN for a Labor & Delivery position requiring at least 2 years of L&D experience, a Maine or Compact RN license, and prior travel experience at a comparable facility.

Details

  • Night shift position: 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM, 12-hour shifts, 48 hours per week
  • Labor & Delivery unit within a hospital that performs approximately 1,800 deliveries per year and 4 scheduled events daily (C-sections, versions, etc.)
  • Unit includes 2 OBED triage rooms, 7 labor rooms, 2 L&D triage rooms, PreOp/PACU in the labor room, and 2 OR suites
  • Adjacent 25-bed Postpartum/Antepartum/GYN/Mother-Baby unit; L&D RNs may monitor overflow antepartum patients
  • Level III NICU on site; facility is one of only two NICUs in Maine and covers a large regional referral area
  • Patient population includes PIH, GDM, pre-eclampsia, eclampsia, HELLP syndrome, shoulder dystocia, postpartum hemorrhage, multiples, fetal loss, substance use, and cervical ripening cases
  • Newborn care responsibilities may include documenting feeds, vitals, and assessments for babies when mother remains on unit (e.g., Mag x 24 hrs)
  • Patient ratios: Cervical Ripening 1:1–3, Laboring 1:1–3, Active Labor 1:1, Couplet/Postpartum/Antepartum up to 3 patients
  • EMR: Cerner with Fetal Link; IV pumps: Alaris; Medication dispensing: Pyxis; Fetal monitoring: Fetal Link (remote at bedside and nurses station)
  • Weekend rotation: at least 4 of every 8 weekend shifts per schedule, which may be consecutive
  • No on-call required; picking up call shifts may be an option
  • Holiday rotation required
  • May float to Mother-Baby unit for antepartum, postpartum, or newborn nursery coverage (excluding 24-hour newborn labs)

Requirements

  • Active ME or Compact RN license required
  • Required certifications: BLS, ACLS, NRP, Intermediate or Advanced Fetal Heart Monitoring (FHM), and MOAB
  • Minimum 2 years of Labor & Delivery RN experience
  • Prior travel nursing experience at a facility of comparable size and acuity required — first-time travelers will not be considered
  • Proficiency in the following skills: Pitocin titration, fetal scalp electrodes, cervical exams, epidural placement assistance, insulin drip and magnesium drip management, shoulder dystocia management, circulating C-sections and/or receiving baby in OR, neonatal resuscitation, IUPC placement assistance and monitoring, lactation support, and safe skin-to-skin protocol
  • Cerner EMR experience strongly preferred given unit usage
  • 2 professional references within the past year required, with at least one from a supervisor, manager, or director (charge nurse acceptable; peer references not accepted)
  • Full SSN, Driver's License, and copies of all certifications required for consideration
  • Flu vaccination required for employment eligibility
  • Must have a permanent address 100+ miles south/southwest of Bangor, ME to qualify for the travel rate; candidates residing 100+ miles north are considered on a case-by-case basis
  • No prior permanent employment at any Northern Light Health Hospital

Additional Information

  • Responsibilities include intrapartum and postpartum care, circulating in the OR for C-sections, neonatal resuscitation, and managing high-acuity OB conditions
  • Charge nurse experience is a plus — candidates are encouraged to indicate whether they have worked in a charge RN (CRN) capacity
  • Rooming-in model used for Mother-Baby; L&D and Mother-Baby are physically separate but adjacent locked units
  • Facility is a goal-designated safe sleep facility; lactation support provided by CLC and IBCLC staff in the labor room
  • Unit support includes a unit secretary and bed flow facilitator (days only), CST in-house 24/7, charge nurse 24/7, phlebotomist, anesthesia 24/7, house supervisor 24/7, RT 24/7, OB provider on call 24/7, family medicine residents in-house 24/7 with attending backup, and certified midwife coverage
  • Orientation consists of approximately 3 days: one day with HR/preceptor, one day of OR/PACU training, and one day on-shift with a preceptor (night shift for night-contracted staff)
  • Navy scrubs are required and provided on site via a scrub machine (6 credits allotted); street clothes worn to and from the facility
  • Free parking available on site
  • All RTO requests require manager approval and must be submitted at the time of consideration
