Job Summary:
As the Travel Laborer, you will ultimately be responsible for supporting telecommunications and underground utility construction projects by preparing jobsites, assisting with excavation activities, operating equipment, handling materials, and maintaining a safe work environment. You will work closely with construction crews to ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with company and customer standards. As the Travel Laborer, your customers are Congruex field operations teams and project stakeholders, and you will make meaningful contributions to the company's success through teamwork, safety, and quality workmanship.
Key Responsibilities (Including, but not limited to):
- Support daily construction activities by preparing jobsites, loading and unloading materials, operating hand tools and small equipment, and maintaining a clean and organized work area
- Assist with trench excavation, shoring, conduit installation, potholing, proofing conduits, backfilling, concrete placement, asphalt restoration, and structure installation
- Inspect, operate, and perform basic maintenance on construction equipment, tamping machines, hand tools, and company vehicles
- Participate in daily safety meetings, follow all company and customer safety procedures, complete required safety training, and immediately report injuries or unsafe conditions
- Support field crews by maintaining jobsite productivity, ensuring quality workmanship, and assisting with project completion while traveling throughout the Midwest as required
- Maintain compliance with company policies, customer requirements, DOT regulations, and all applicable safety standards
- Additional responsibilities within functional scope based on business needs
Required Qualifications:
Education, Licensing, and Certifications
- High School Diploma or GED required
- Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) required
- Valid Driver's License with an acceptable driving record
- OSHA 10 Certification required or ability to obtain as required
Experience
- Experience working in construction, utility, telecommunications, or related outdoor labor environments
- Experience operating construction equipment, hand tools, and power tools
- Willingness to travel extensively throughout the Midwest and work extended hours as business needs require
Skills and Abilities
- Strong understanding of construction safety practices and OSHA regulations
- Ability to safely operate hand tools, tamping equipment, and small construction equipment
- Strong communication and teamwork skills with the ability to work effectively with field crews and supervisors
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions while maintaining attention to detail
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and physically demanding environments
- Ability to work overtime, nights, weekends, and on-call schedules as required
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous experience in underground utility or telecommunications construction
- Experience operating small construction equipment and machinery
- Knowledge of trenching, excavation, conduit installation, and restoration activities
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift and carry materials weighing up to 75 lbs.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb ladders, and work in physically demanding positions for extended periods
- Work performed outdoors in varying weather conditions, around heavy equipment, active construction sites, and confined spaces
- Ability to safely operate company vehicles and work around moving equipment and machinery
- Ability to wear required personal protective equipment, including safety boots, hard hat, safety glasses, and other required PPE
- Must be able to pass a pre-employment background check, drug screen, Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) review, and participate in random drug screenings
