Description

American Traveler is hiring a travel RN for a Level 3/4 NICU position at a Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center and teaching hospital, requiring at least 2 years of high-acuity neonatal ICU experience and an active NC or compact RN license.

Details

  • 53-bed NICU unit with an average patient census of 58, plus overflow capacity
  • High-acuity, fast-paced neonatal ICU environment within a Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center and teaching hospital
  • Patient population includes complex respiratory (RDS, MAS, BPD), cardiac (TOF, HLHS, PPHN), neurological (HIE, IVH, seizures), and GI/GU conditions including NEC, NAS, sepsis, and congenital anomalies
  • Nurse-to-patient ratios vary by acuity: 1:1, 1:2, or 1:3
  • EMR: Epic (experience required)
  • IV pumps: Alaris and Medfusion syringe pumps; medication dispensing via Omnicell; monitoring via Philips
  • 12-hour night shifts, 1900–0700, 36 hours per week
  • Weekend rotation requires 2 Fridays and 2 Mondays, plus every other weekend (Saturday/Sunday) within each 6-week scheduling cycle
  • Floating may be required to Neonatal PCU or, as a helping hand, to Pediatric CVICU, PICU, or general Peds units (unless the candidate has prior experience in those populations)
  • No on-call responsibilities for travelers; if the NICU cannot utilize a traveler, they may be floated to similar units

Requirements

  • Active NC or compact RN license required
  • Current certifications: BLS and NRP
  • Minimum 2 years of Level 3 and/or Level 4 NICU experience required, with most recent experience within the last year
  • Epic EMR experience required
  • Proficiency required in: critical care vasoactive drip titration, invasive line management (art lines, CVP), ventilator and trach management, chest tube management, CRRT, and ECMO (baby side preferred; manager has shown flexibility on ECMO, EVD, ICP, and CRRT experience)
  • Additional skills required: aseptic/sterile technique, oral/nasal suctioning, g-tube/j-tube and feeding tube management, epidural and PCA management, sedation/analgesic drip management, Foley insertion and management, bedside procedures with providers, and discharge skills
  • Candidate's permanent address must be located at least 50 miles from the facility to be eligible for this position
  • Last 4 digits of SSN and full date of birth required for consideration
  • Minimum 1 professional reference dated within the past year, from a Supervisor, Manager, Director, or Charge RN

Additional Information

  • Provide high-acuity neonatal nursing care across a wide range of complex diagnoses and critical conditions
  • Department support includes a unit secretary every shift, 24/7 charge nurse, 24/7 IV/VAT/PICC team, resource nurse, RT, intensivist, residents, APPs, centralized and bedside telemetry monitoring, unit-based educators (AM and PM), and 6 clinical supervisors
  • Orientation consists of 2 days of departmental orientation via NEO
  • Schedule is determined every 6 weeks based on unit needs after the core team schedule is set; Clinical Supervisor will provide dates of need
  • Travelers are required to work holidays as scheduled; unit expectation includes covering the day of, the evening of, and/or the day after every other holiday while on contract
  • RTO requires manager approval; candidates with significant time-off needs may be required to extend their contract
  • Scrub color: Navy; long-sleeve undershirts permitted but must be solid Navy or White; no tight scrubs; pediatric-friendly scrub tops preferred; no other organizational branded attire
  • 'Bare Below Elbow' policy in nurseries: no watches, jewelry (real or plastic), rings, or artificial nails
  • Unit culture emphasizes teamwork, trust, accountability, respect, and flexibility
  • First-time travelers may be considered on a case-by-case basis with manager approval
  • Candidates who have previously worked a permanent position at an Advocate Health Southeast (AHSE) facility must have been separated for at least 1 year to be eligible
