Description

American Traveler is hiring a Med/Surg RN for a 12-hour night shift float pool role at a Level I trauma center, requiring an active AL or compact RN license and at least 18 months of MedSurg and/or ICU experience.

Details

  • Float pool position within the Med/Surg department of a 492-bed Level I Trauma Center with a Level III NICU and Primary Stroke Center
  • May be assigned to units including Trauma Surgical, Neuroscience, MedSurg/Oncology, Orthopedics, or MS/Ortho/Urology depending on need
  • Patient ratios typically range from 1:4 to 1:6 depending on unit and acuity
  • 12-hour night shifts scheduled from 7pm to 7am, averaging 36 hours per week
  • Weekend rotation required either every other weekend or 4 weekend days per month
  • No on-call requirements
  • Floating required to like units based on patient type and unit needs
  • Uses Cerner EMR, with Epic experience also considered
  • Utilizes Plum 360 IV pumps, Omnicell medication dispensing, and Spacelabs monitors
  • Telemetry is monitored by telemetry techs, but RNs must interpret and confirm strip readings every 4 hours
  • Scheduling follows a 4-week cycle using Smart Square, with no self-scheduling

Requirements

  • Active RN license (AL or Compact) required
  • Current BLS and NIHSS certifications required
  • Minimum of 18 months of MedSurg and/or ICU experience required
  • EPIC or Cerner EMR experience required; Cerner experience specifically required for candidates with ICU-only background
  • At least 1 reference from a charge nurse or higher within the past 12 months required for consideration
  • Copies of current certifications required for consideration
  • Date of birth (day and month) required for consideration

Additional Information

  • Responsibilities vary by assigned unit and may include wound care, IV starts, trach care, chest tube management, ostomy/colostomy care, and medication administration
  • Unit support typically includes CNAs, charge nurses, HUCs, phlebotomy, IV/VAT team, and hospitalist coverage
  • New or returning travelers absent 1+ year receive 24 hours of classroom orientation and 24 hours of unit orientation
  • Holiday coverage includes one major and one minor seasonal holiday per policy, though specific days off are not guaranteed
  • Facility maintains blackout dates throughout the year during which time-off requests are not approved
  • Scrub color is not restricted to a specific color
  • Free parking is available in the designated parking deck
  • Candidates must reside outside a 60-mile radius of the facility to be eligible
  • Former staff must wait 6 months from their last shift before returning as a traveler
