Description

American Traveler is seeking a Registered Nurse - Med/Surg for a float pool position requiring 18 months of MedSurg/ICU experience and an active AL or compact RN license.

Details

  • Staff Float Pool MedSurg position within a 492-bed Level II Trauma Center with Level III NICU and Primary Stroke Center
  • Assigned a home unit on first day of orientation, which may include Trauma Surgical, Neuroscience, MedSurg/Oncology, Clinical Decision Unit, Orthopedics, or MS/Ortho/Urology units
  • Patient ratios range from 1:5 to 1:6 depending on unit
  • 12-hour night shifts, 7:00pm start, 36 hours per week on a 36/48 schedule
  • 4-week self-scheduling cycle utilizing Smart Square, no self-scheduling permitted
  • Weekend rotation of every other weekend or 4 weekend days per month
  • No on-call requirements
  • Floating required to like units/patient locations (e.g., MS-MS, MS-ICU task, MS-ER/MS holds, ICU-ICU, ICU-MS task limit of 3, ICU-ER/ICU holds)
  • Cerner EMR preferred
  • Uses Plum 360 IV pumps, Omnicell medication dispensing, and Spacelabs monitors
  • Telemetry is monitored by dedicated techs, but RNs are required to interpret and confirm strip readings every 4 hours
  • Unit support includes CNAs (1:6 ratio), charge nurse, receptionist/HUC, phlebotomy, IV/VAT team, and hospitalist

Requirements

  • Active RN license (AL or compact) required
  • Current BLS and NIHSS certifications required
  • Minimum 18 months of MedSurg and/or ICU experience with EPIC or Cerner experience required
  • Cerner experience required if experience is strictly ICU-based
  • Specific unit-based skills may include wound care, chest tubes, NGT, PEG, trach care, central line care, IV starts, ostomy care, foley care, and PCA pump management depending on assignment
  • Strong assessment, prioritization, communication, and documentation skills required

Additional Information

  • Interpret and confirm telemetry strip readings every 4 hours as required
  • Provide direct patient care including wound care, tube management, medication administration, and escalation of care as needed per unit assignment
  • One major and one minor seasonal holiday coverage expected per facility policy, though specific dates off are not contractually guaranteed prior to arrival
  • Up to 7 days of requested time off may be approved in advance, excluding facility blackout dates
  • Any scrub color permitted
  • Parking available in designated parking deck, levels 2 through 4
  • First-time travelers welcome to apply
  • Previous staff must wait 6 months from last shift worked before returning as a traveler
  • Travelers new to the facility or returning after 1+ years will receive 24 hours of classroom orientation and 24 hours of unit orientation
  • Must reside outside a 60-mile radius of the facility to be eligible for consideration
