Description

American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for a Med/Surg-Oncology unit requiring at least 2 years of experience and West Virginia (or compact) RN licensure.

Details

  • Acute care Med/Surg/Oncology unit (6S Post-Op/Oncology/Tele) in a Level 2 trauma hospital
  • 36-bed unit with typical nurse-to-patient ratios of 1:5-6
  • Cares for general Med/Surg patients, some post-op cases (lap chole, lap appy), and oncology patients with complications such as neutropenic precautions, pneumonia, and infections
  • Perm nursing staff administer chemotherapy; travelers will care for patients with chest tubes, and experience with PleurX chest tubes is a plus
  • Occasional psychiatric patients requiring 1:1 sitter care
  • Uses EPIC EMR
  • 12-hour day shifts (7a-7p) with every-other-weekend requirement (Sat/Sun)
  • Required to float to any Med/Surg/Tele unit
  • Charge Nurse available 24/7; Charge Nurse does not take patient assignment on Days but does on Nights
  • 3 CNAs on Days and 3 on Nights support the unit
  • Respiratory Therapy manages CPAP/BiPap equipment
  • Heparin is the only titratable drip used on the unit; no cardiac drips
  • Telemetry monitoring using Phillips monitors with a central monitor tech, though RNs must be able to read and interpret strips
  • Holiday coverage required as part of the perm staff rotation schedule

Requirements

  • Active RN license (West Virginia or Compact) currently in hand
  • Current BLS (AHA) certification required
  • ONS/ONCC Chemotherapy Biotherapy certification is a plus but not required
  • Minimum 2 years of RN experience required
  • BSN not required for this position
  • Must be able to interpret telemetry strips
  • Copy of unexpired driver's license required for consideration

Additional Information

  • Provide direct patient care across a mix of general Med/Surg, post-surgical, and oncology patients
  • Manage patients with chest tubes, including those discharged with PleurX chest tubes
  • Royal blue scrubs required; false nails are not permitted
  • Must reside outside a 50-mile radius of the facility, as no local travelers are accepted
  • Travelers who previously worked at any WVU Medicine location must have taken a 2-year break before reapplying
  • Travelers are limited to a cumulative one-year maximum working within WVU Medicine before requiring a 2-year break
  • Cancellation policy allows for 2 shifts per 13-week contract
