Travel RN – MedSurg Ortho/Neuro
Looking for a Travel RN who is comfortable caring for a mix of MedSurg, Ortho, and Neuro patients? This could be a great fit if you like a supportive unit, manageable ratios, and a predictable 12-hour schedule.

Days: 7:00 AM–7:30 PM
Nights: 7:00 PM–7:30 AM
Weekend: Every other weekend
- Days: Saturday & Sunday
- Nights: Friday, Saturday & Sunday
Scrubs: Navy blue
What you'll be caring for
The unit sees a good variety of Ortho, Neuro, and MedSurg patients, including:
- Total joint and spine patients
- Burr holes and craniotomies
- Seizures
- Brain stimulator patients
- Hip patients requiring Buck's traction
- MedSurg overflow
Patient ratios are generally 1:5, with a maximum of around 1:6.
What you'll need
- BLS required
- ACLS preferred
- EPIC experience
- Comfortable with basic arrhythmia recognition
- Ability to recognize potentially fatal rhythms
- Experience with common MedSurg/Ortho/Neuro patients
The unit does not require RNs to interpret telemetry strips independently, but basic rhythm knowledge is important.
Unit Support
You’ll have a good support system around you:
- Charge Nurse available 24/7
- Hospitalist in-house 24/7
- RT in-house 24/7
- Pharmacy in-house 24/7
- PCT/Nurse Aide support
- EPIC charting
- BiPAP, CPAP and High-Flow available
The only IV drips commonly used are Heparin and Protonix, and nurses are not expected to titrate cardiac drips.
Scheduling & Floating
- 12-hour shifts are standard, but 8-hour shifts may be possible
- Block scheduling can be accommodated if included in the contract
- Night shifts are often scheduled in blocks
- Schedule requests are entered through Kronos
- Travelers may float to MedSurg units
- No floating to ED or Behavioral Health
- Orientation includes 1 shift with a preceptor, plus Net Learning and EPIC modules
Important Submission Details
- Candidate must live more than 50 miles from the facility
- Unexpired driver's license is required with submission
- Any background hits must be disclosed before submission
- Only 1 WVU position can be submitted at a time
- Maximum 2 candidates per opening
- Former permanent employees must be gone for 2 years
- Former travelers who completed a full year must also be gone for 2 years
- Travel teams must be submitted together
