Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a 13-week Med/Surg Orthopedics night shift position at a Level II Trauma facility, requiring an active NE or Compact RN license and a minimum of 2 years of experience.

Details

  • Acute care Med/Surg Orthopedics unit in a Level II Trauma hospital
  • 22-bed unit with an average daily census of 6 patients
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:5-6; CNAs/patient care techs available at a 1:13 ratio
  • Common patient population includes total knee, hip, ankle, and shoulder replacements, as well as spinal surgeries
  • Telemetry boxes are used on the unit; tele techs read and interpret strips — RNs are not required to read their own
  • Common drips include pain medications, antibiotics, and blood; RNs are not required to titrate drips
  • 24/7 phlebotomy services available on-site
  • Charting is done in Epic; experience preferred
  • 12-hour night shifts, 6:30 PM – 6:30 AM
  • Self-scheduling with cyclic rotation; block scheduling is not approved unless weekends only
  • Every other weekend requirement
  • Floating may be required to Med/Surg, rehab, or PCU (Med/Surg acuity only)
  • On-call response time is 30 minutes if called back in after being placed on call

Requirements

  • Active NE state or Compact (NLC) RN license — must be active at time of consideration; pending licenses are not accepted
  • Minimum 2 years of RN experience required
  • Current BLS certification required; pending certifications are not accepted
  • Med/Surg experience required; orthopedics experience strongly beneficial
  • Must reside at least 50 miles from the facility — a driver's license is required for consideration and will be used to verify permanent address
  • 2 professional references required: one supervisor from within the last 12 months and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years, including dates of employment and eligibility for rehire
  • Candidates may not currently be employed (full-time, part-time, or PRN) at any CommonSpirit-affiliated facility, including CHI and/or Dignity; those employed PRN through outside staffing firms will be considered

Additional Information

  • Orientation consists of 1 day of unit/department-specific training, followed by a pass/fail open-book exam on the Friday of orientation week — a score of at least 90% is required to pass
  • Holiday shifts rotate with permanent staff
  • Artificial nails are prohibited in all patient care departments; refusal to remove them will result to contract termination
  • RTO must be disclosed upfront and is limited to 7 or fewer days per 13-week contract; additional RTO will not be approved after consideration
  • Successful candidates on this unit tend to be team-oriented, flexible, and willing to take ownership of their responsibilities
