Description

American Traveler is hiring an RN for a Med/Surg Ortho Trauma unit requiring 2+ years of experience and a NE or compact RN license.

Details

  • Acute care Level 1 trauma hospital setting on the Med Tele/Ortho unit, 4th Floor North & South
  • 55-bed unit with nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:5-6
  • Patient population includes joint replacements, fractures, colon resections, COPD exacerbation, prostatectomy, cellulitis, sepsis, ortho trauma, GI bleeds, pneumonia, and failure to thrive
  • 12-hour night shifts, scheduled 1830-0700
  • Uses EPIC EMR
  • RNs required to titrate heparin, lidocaine, and ketamine drips, and manage PCA pumps
  • Charge nurse present each shift and takes a patient assignment
  • Nurse aides/patient care techs on unit with ratios of 1:10-20
  • Tele techs interpret monitor strips; RNs should maintain basic tele awareness
  • Every other weekend work required, with potential for additional coverage based on department needs
  • Schedules posted 6 weeks in advance
  • Floating required to other medical surgical areas or units with MedSurg patients awaiting a bed
  • 2-3 holidays required between Thanksgiving and New Year's

Requirements

  • Active RN license (NE State or Compact/NLC) required, pending licenses not accepted
  • BLS (AHA) certification required; ACLS preferred
  • Minimum 2 years of RN experience required
  • Acute care and Level 1 trauma setting experience preferred
  • EPIC EMR experience preferred
  • Driver's license copy required for consideration
  • Two professional references required: one supervisor from within the last 12 months worked, and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years worked, including dates of employment and eligibility for rehire

Additional Information

  • Provide direct patient care to medical surgical and orthopedic trauma patients, including joint replacement and fracture cases
  • Strong focus on hourly rounding and responsiveness to patient needs
  • Manage a high volume of daily discharges and admissions
  • Success on this unit requires strong time management, good attendance, teamwork, compassion, and patient-first care
  • Unit serves a culturally diverse patient population, including Spanish, Karen, and Burmese-speaking patients
  • Mechanical lifts available in every other patient room
  • 2 days of unit-specific orientation provided
  • Navy blue scrubs required for RNs
  • Artificial nails prohibited in all patient care departments; refusal to remove will result in contract termination
  • RNs complete a pass/fail open-book exam during orientation covering skills learned, requiring a 90% score to pass
  • Must reside at least 50 miles from the facility to be eligible for the position, as verified by driver's license
  • Candidates may not have been directly employed (full time, part time, or PRN) by any CommonSpirit-affiliated facility, including CHI or Dignity, within the past year
  • Up to 7 days of RTO may be requested upfront per 13-week contract; additional RTO will not be approved after submission
