Description

American Traveler is hiring a Med/Surg RN for a Staff Float Pool night shift position requiring at least 18 months of Med/Surg experience and an active AL or compact RN license.

Details

  • Work in the Staff Float Pool Med/Surg department of a 492-bed Level II Trauma Center with a Level III NICU and Primary Stroke Center
  • Assigned a home unit on the first day of orientation, with potential rotations across units including Trauma Surgical, Neuroscience, MedSurg/Oncology, Clinical Decision Unit, Orthopedics, and Urology/MS/Ortho
  • Patient populations vary by unit and include general surgery, vascular, neuroscience (CVA, TBI, seizure, craniotomy), oncology, general medical (COPD, CHF, sepsis, renal failure), orthopedics, and urology/ENT cases
  • Patient ratios generally range from 1:5 to 1:6 depending on unit
  • Uses Cerner EMR (preferred), Plum 360 IV pumps, Omnicell medication dispensing, and Spacelabs monitors
  • Telemetry is monitored by dedicated techs, but RNs are required to interpret and confirm strip readings every 4 hours
  • 12-hour night shifts (7:00pm start), 36 hours per week on a 36/48 schedule
  • Weekend rotation required (every other weekend or 4 weekend days per month)
  • No on-call responsibilities
  • Floating required to like units (e.g., MS-MS, MS-ICU for tasks, MS-ER/MS holds) with limits based on unit type
  • Support staff includes CNAs, charge nurses, HUC/receptionist, phlebotomy, IV/VAT team, hospitalist, and telemetry techs

Requirements

  • Active RN license (Alabama or compact) required
  • BLS and NIHSS certifications required
  • Minimum 18 months of Med/Surg experience required
  • Experience with Epic or Cerner EMR required
  • Skills may include wound care, chest tubes, NGT, IV starts, trach care, PEG/ostomy care, central line care, and medication administration depending on assigned unit

Additional Information

  • Provide direct patient care across multiple Med/Surg-related units based on daily staffing needs
  • Travelers new to the facility or returning after 1+ years will receive 24 hours of classroom orientation and 24 hours on the unit
  • Former staff members must wait at least 6 months from their last shift before returning as a traveler
  • Holiday coverage required for one major and one minor seasonal holiday per facility policy, though specific days off are not guaranteed prior to arrival
  • Scrubs may be any color
  • Parking available in designated deck levels (2nd through 4th floors)
  • Must reside outside a 60-mile radius of the facility to be eligible for this position
