Description

American Traveler is hiring a Med/Surg Telemetry RN for a 13-week night shift assignment requiring IL licensure and total joint surgical experience.

Details

• Inpatient surgical unit on the 3rd floor with 48 beds across two buildings
• Nurse to patient ratio of 1:4-6 on nights, supported by LPNs and virtual admission/discharge nurses
• Primary care nursing model frequently used
• Patient population includes neuro (laminectomy, cervical fusion), abdominal surgery, ostomies, hernia repair, total hip/knee replacements, PICC/TPN/lipids, fem-pop bypass, dialysis catheter insertions, BKA/AKA, PCA, epidurals, IV antibiotics, chronic pain management, sepsis, and urgent OR cases
• Requires titration of Heparin drips per protocol
• Tele monitor tech available; RNs responsible for interpreting their own strips using Draeger monitors
• CNAs available on unit but may be pulled for sitter duties, especially needed on night shift
• RT manages CPAP, Airvo, and occasional BiPAP equipment
• 12-hour night shifts starting at 7pm, scheduled 6 weeks in advance
• Every other weekend required (Saturday and Sunday, both shifts)
• Included in holiday rotation with core staff
• No call or standby requirements
• Floating limited to like units only; if floated to higher acuity units, RN would assist without taking a patient assignment
• High patient volume with 8-12 surgical admits per day alongside ongoing discharges

Requirements

• Active IL RN license required
• BLS (AHA) and NIHSS certifications required
• Minimum 1 year of surgical nursing experience required
• Total joint replacement experience required
• Experience with PCA pumps, reversal drugs (Narcan), and sepsis management required
• Experience with TPN and lipids required
• Experience with narcotic administration required
• EPIC EMR experience required due to upcoming system conversion

Additional Information

• Unit is undergoing an EPIC conversion in Q2 2026
• Charge nurse role typically filled by Blessing staff on day shift; house supervisor may fill this role on nights and takes a smaller patient assignment to assist the team
• Black scrubs required
• Unit-specific orientation includes one 12-hour shift on hire date and unit, with an extended first day (12-14 hours) for computer-based modules and general orientation
• 4 hours of billable computer modules required to be completed by 7am the Friday prior to start
• Fast-paced environment with heavy patient acuity
