Description

American Traveler is hiring an RN for a Med/Surg Tele position at a busy Level 1 Trauma center, requiring TX or compact RN licensure and 2+ years of experience.

Details

  • 24-bed Med/Tele unit within an acute care, Level 1 Trauma hospital
  • Unit includes 2 negative pressure rooms for TB and overflow COVID isolation
  • Patient ratio of 1:5-6 with a focus on fast admit/discharge turnover and 11am discharges
  • Patient population includes post-op spine and abdominal surgical overflow, cystic fibrosis, bariatric complications, sickle cell, and wound care/pressure injury cases
  • Up to 2 codes per shift may occur
  • RNs titrate drips including Amio, Primacore, Bumex, Lasix, Dobutamine, and IVIG, and administer frequent blood transfusions and chemo premeds
  • Tele techs monitor strips and notify RNs of changes, but RNs must be proficient in reading and interpreting telemetry
  • Charge nurse and unit secretary present on all shifts
  • PCAs support the unit with a goal of 3 per shift (sometimes only 2)
  • RT manages high flow, nasal cannula, CPAP, and BiPAP (non-continuous); continuous BiPAP patients transfer to Stepdown
  • RT performs nebulizer treatments
  • 12-hour day shifts with Every Other Weekend (EOW) requirement of 6 weekend shifts in a 6-week period
  • No self-scheduling; shifts assigned based on unit needs
  • No call or standby requirements
  • Travelers are first to float, limited to med/surg tele acuity floors when overstaffed
  • EPIC EMR experience required

Requirements

  • Active TX or compact RN license required
  • Required certifications: BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS
  • Minimum 2 years of RN experience required
  • 3+ years of experience and previous travel experience preferred, along with experience in a busy hospital setting
  • Must be proficient in reading telemetry strips and performing EKGs
  • Must be proficient in blood administration
  • Experience with Cystic Fibrosis and Sickle Cell patient populations preferred
  • Strong critical thinking and decision-making skills required
  • Must pass a Relias EKG exam prior to orientation start
  • EPIC EMR experience required
  • Copy of driver's license required for consideration
  • 2 professional references required: one supervisor from within the last 12 months worked, and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years worked, including dates of employment and eligibility for rehire

Additional Information

  • Responsible for recognizing and communicating changes in patient condition promptly to physicians
  • Participates in daily MDR discharge rounding at 11am, reporting discharge barriers to MDs and case management
  • Uses a walkie talkie for floor communication
  • Must be a strong team player with good communication skills
  • 2-day unit/department specific orientation provided
  • Scrub color preference is teal; black tops/pants permitted but pants must be teal
  • Holiday coverage required per core staff rotation, with flexibility expected; PTO cannot be accepted from 12/10 through the first week of January
  • Candidates may not have been directly employed (full time, part time, or PRN) by any CommonSpirit, CHI, or Dignity facility within the past year; PRN employment through outside firms will be considered
  • Daily and monthly parking options available on or off campus
