Description:
The practice of nursing as a Licensed Practical Nurse involves performing tasks and responsibilities within the scope of supportive and restorative care.
This includes medication administration and specialized tasks under the direction of a Registered Nurse or legally authorized physician or dentist.
Nursing care is delivered in structured and routine situations free of scientific complexity.
Responsibilities include assistance with activities of daily living.
The administration of treatments and routine tasks, such as suctioning and urinary catheterizations, is required.
Preparation of patients for surgery, diagnostic tests, treatments, and examinations is essential.
Medications must be administered within the scope of practice.
Accurate collection, labeling, and processing of specimens are required.
Identification and setup of intravenous equipment and delivery of solutions for infusion through peripheral access devices is part of the role.
Administering blood or blood products requires special training.
Important observations, treatments, medications, incidents, and accidents associated with patients must be reported to the Registered Nurse and documented appropriately.
Assumption of responsibility for assignments delegated by the Registered Nurse is expected.
Contributions to nursing care plans in collaboration with other nursing staff members are part of the responsibilities.
Reinforcement of the patient and family teaching process identified by the Registered Nurse is essential.
Providing emotional support to patients and their families or significant others is expected.
Assisting with the rehabilitation of patients according to the nursing care plan is part of the role.
Physical comfort and safety of the patient must be ensured.
Contributions to patient care conferences are required.
Assistance in emergency resuscitative procedures by initiating a call and performing resuscitative procedures, such as Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS), is essential.
Documentation of nursing care delivered on appropriate forms within the medical record is required.
