Job Title: Laboratory Technologist Profession: Medical Laboratory Specialty: Laboratory Technician, Medical Technologist, Medic Duration: 13 weeks Shift: Nights Hours per Shift: Not specified Experience: Minimum years of experience not specified License: Certification/registration or certification/registry eligible as a Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Technician is required. Certifications: AMT or ASCP certification preferred Must-Have: Associate’s or Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Medical Technology or related area of specialty. Description: This position requires working a night shift and rotating weekends. The Laboratory Technologist works under the supervision of the Laboratory Manager. Responsibilities include performing laboratory tests and accurately reporting results to the physician for diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of diseases. The technologist assists with the general operation of the laboratory, quality assurance programs, and maintenance of laboratory equipment. Independent judgment, professional education, and national certification are required. Upon satisfactory completion of the probation period, the Laboratory Technologist will hold a general supervisory role for waived, moderate, and high complexity testing. Adherence to the Mission and Values of the organization is expected. Essential job functions include: Performing complex tests in all areas of the laboratory assigned, according to established protocols and procedures. Performing phlebotomies, including arterial punctures, capillary punctures, and venipunctures as appropriate for the patients. Processing specimens utilizing protocols and technical knowledge. Calibrating, standardizing, and maintaining instruments following established procedures. Performing quality control, preventive maintenance, and troubleshooting protocols to ensure proper functioning of instruments and reagents. Preparing and maintaining reagent supplies necessary for test performance. Validating and reporting results of tests performed accurately and in a timely manner. Assisting in the development and maintenance of laboratory policy and procedural manuals. Orienting and teaching students and new employees. Researching and developing new procedures as assigned. Following established safety practices including biohazard protocols, exposure control plans, infection control measures, and chemical hygiene standards. Promoting effective working relationships to facilitate the department's ability to meet its goals and objectives. Attending all in-service education as required by policies and national credentialing agencies. Demonstrating respect for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees to ensure a professional environment. Seeking out needed information by staying informed about relevant meetings, policies, and communications. Ensuring reliable attendance and punctuality, including observing break times and extending scheduled shifts as necessary to meet patient demands. Performing duties safely, in compliance with all safety policies and procedures. Complying with the Code of Conduct and all appropriate policies and procedures. Walking, standing, kneeling, and bending are required most of the time. Fine motor skills and manual dexterity are necessary to perform essential job functions. Candidates must be able to function in limited spaces and with frequent interruptions. Ability to adapt to day-to-day temperature variations and moderate noise levels from laboratory equipment. Exposure risk is categorized as Category I, meaning employees are at risk for exposure to blood-borne pathogens.
