Job Description

Job Title: Medical Technologist, Medical Laboratory Technician Profession: Medical Laboratory Specialty: Medical Technologist, Medical Laboratory Technician Duration: 13 weeks Shift: Primarily Evening shift with weekend rotation Hours per Shift: 5 - 8 hours Experience: Minimum of 2 years required License: Certified MT with ASCP, AMT, NCCLS or equivalent certification. Certifications: Certified MLS with ASCP, AMT, NCCLS or equivalent certification. Must-Have: Blood bank and microbiology experience preferred Description: Under the direction of supervisors, the Medical Technologist is directly responsible for the prompt and accurate performance of assigned work. This role involves performing analyses on blood and other body fluids for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. The technologist maintains proficiency to work in all clinical departments of the laboratory. Essential Functions: Performs assigned duties accurately, efficiently, and according to established procedures. Uses proper techniques and equipment in the performance of duties. Prepares specimens for processing by accurately identifying appropriate specimens and logging them into the department. Enters all required patient information and assures proper testing as ordered. Processes and begins analysis of all specimens by manual or automated methods to determine results for efficient reporting. Assures quality control criteria are always met before releasing any reports. Immediately repeats any procedures that appear out of control following established departmental protocol. Keeps work organized to avoid confusion and potential errors. Consistently reviews results for accuracy and completeness before releasing. Repeats results that are inconsistent with previous findings or that fail delta checks. Requests new specimens when appropriate. Seeks assistance from supervisors when difficulties in proper identification, interpretation, or processing occur. Assists with the training of technical personnel by demonstrating techniques and reviewing work performance as requested. Participates in proficiency testing or quality assurance activities as instructed. Maintains current knowledge of laboratory and hospital policies and procedures as well as performance standards. Demonstrates continuous awareness and compliance with safety, infection control, and quality assurance procedures. Advises supervisor of potential hazards when noted. Suggests ways of improving laboratory services when appropriate. Complies with policies for the release of patient information and documents the time and required information when reports are released. Maintains all departmental equipment and supplies. Checks the performance of all instruments daily and maintains them in working condition. Communicates any problems to supervisors promptly. Maintains the ability to troubleshoot both instrumental and procedural problems. Assists with maintaining sufficient inventory of departmental reagents and supplies. Submits information or requests to supervisors when additional materials are anticipated. Maintains cost control in the utilization of materials and suggests ways to improve conservation. Rotates, dates, and tests reagents as they are received or prepared to ensure accuracy and avoid expiration. Assists with the implementation of new procedures or evaluation of new products or equipment. Evaluates new products and procedures and provides written information regarding findings to supervisors. Suggests changes in methodologies or workflow that will increase accuracy and efficiency. Performs specimen collection duties and verifies patient identification prior to collection. Responds promptly to any request for specimen collection and communicates effectively with relevant areas if delays occur. Non-Essential Functions: Performs related and miscellaneous duties as assigned. Voluntarily assists coworkers when patient care priorities and workload fluctuate.
