Job Title: Medical Laboratory Technician Profession: Medical Laboratory Specialty: Medical Technologist, Medical Laboratory Technician Duration: 15 weeks Shift: Monday-Thursday Hours per Shift: 10.5 hours Experience: Minimum of 2 years License: Active Phlebotomist License, Active Washington State MA-P License Certifications: None specified Must-Have: Active Phlebotomist License, Active Washington State MA-P License Description: The Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) performs various technical, clerical, and information systems-related procedures in Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, Blood Bank, specimen procurement, and other laboratory areas as requested on patient specimens, control materials, and proficiency samples. The MLT operates laboratory equipment within established policies to provide timely and accurate test results to doctors. This skilled individual is responsible for performing laboratory tests efficiently and accurately for high-quality patient care. The MLT monitors quality control procedures and maintains involvement in the Laboratory Quality Improvement program. The Medical Laboratory Technician analyzes laboratory findings to check the accuracy of the results. The MLT enters data from the analysis of medical tests and clinical results into the computer for storage. The MLT sets up, cleans, and maintains laboratory equipment. They work with laboratory equipment, helping to prepare and analyze slides and specimens of human blood, tissue, or other cells. The MLT operates, calibrates, and maintains equipment used in quantitative and qualitative analysis, such as chemistry, hematology, coagulation, and microbiology. The MLT establishes and monitors quality assurance programs and activities to ensure the accuracy of laboratory results. They collect and study blood samples to determine the number of cells, their morphology, or their blood group, blood type, and compatibility for transfusion purposes, using microscopic techniques. The MLT analyzes samples of biological material for chemical content or reaction. They conduct chemical analysis of body fluids, including blood, urine, and spinal fluid, to determine the presence of normal and abnormal components. MTLs help identify abnormalities in the samples, such as malignancies, bacteria, parasites, or genetic abnormalities. They may also assist in blood-typing or other routine blood tests. The MLT provides technical information about test results to physicians, family members, and researchers. Other duties may be assigned as needed. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Organize work and manage the use of time to complete technical tasks within realistic time limits. Control laboratory equipment and adjust instruments to perform laboratory procedures. Use computers to operate laboratory instruments and calculate, record, evaluate, and transmit data. Analyze and interpret laboratory results with considerable judgment. This includes all areas of the laboratory, including hematology, chemistry, special chemistry, serology, blood bank, microbiology, and urinalysis. Maintain instrument and lab section as assigned by the Lab Manager. This includes scheduled maintenance and monitoring consumables. Perform specimen collection on patients of all age groups. This includes venipuncture, capillary draws, culturing sites, and instructing nursing staff on the correct method of sample collection.
