Medical-Surgical RN Assignment Highlights
- Work in a fast-paced acute-care environment with a typical daily census of approximately 37 patients.
- Collaborate with IV teams, respiratory services, physical therapy, pharmacy, radiology, social services, rapid response teams, and other clinical support departments.
- Use your broad medical-surgical nursing skill set while caring for patients with complex medical and postoperative needs.
- A reliable vehicle is required for this travel nursing assignment.
Medical-Surgical Registered Nurse Requirements
- Active Registered Nurse license in Oregon or a compact RN license in hand at submission.
- At least 1 year of recent medical-surgical RN experience.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Recent experience with electronic health record documentation and computerized charting.
- Demonstrated ability to safely care for approximately four patients in an acute-care setting.
- Proficiency with core medical-surgical nursing skills, including IV initiation and maintenance, telemetry, isolation precautions, oxygen therapy, wound care, drains, blood products, central lines, PICC lines, and medication protocols.
- Ability to manage or assist with advanced patient-care needs such as chest tubes, tracheostomies, high-flow nasal cannula, feeding tubes, continuous bladder irrigation, and pre/post-hemodialysis care.
- Willingness to work assigned weekend coverage and commit to working 3 of 5 designated holidays when scheduled.
- Two professional references covering at least 1 year of experience within the last 3 years.
Medical-Surgical RN Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive nursing assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation for adult and geriatric medical-surgical patients.
- Administer medications and treatments safely, including insulin, heparin, IV therapies, blood products, and patient-controlled analgesia as indicated.
- Monitor telemetry and recognize changes in patient condition, escalating concerns promptly and participating in rapid response or code-team interventions when needed.
- Perform and document wound care, wound-vac management, central-line and PICC-line care, chest-tube care, surgical-drain care, and ostomy management.
- Support patients with respiratory needs, including nasal cannula, high-flow nasal cannula, non-invasive airway management, suctioning, and tracheostomy care.
- Manage feeding tubes, continuous bladder irrigation, renal-failure care, and pre/post-hemodialysis needs within scope and competency.
- Educate patients and families, coordinate discharge planning, and communicate effectively with providers and interdisciplinary healthcare team members.
- Float between appropriate medical-surgical units or nearby affiliated locations as needed while maintaining high standards of patient safety and professionalism.
