Key Responsibilities
Clinical Leadership
- Develop, implement, revise, and evaluate nursing standards, policies, and procedures.
- Direct and coordinate nursing services to ensure safe, high-quality patient/resident care.
- Advocate for patient/resident rights, privacy, confidentiality, and individualized care.
- Provide guidance to nursing staff in recognizing and responding to complex patient/resident care needs.
- Collaborate with physicians, department heads, pharmacy, case management, admissions, and other interdisciplinary team members.
- Ensure safe medication administration and compliance with established protocols.
- Maintain nursing staff competency and promote adherence to clinical standards.
- Address infection control, behavioral, psychosocial, spiritual, and cultural care needs.
Quality & Compliance
- Participate in Quality Assurance/Performance Improvement activities and implement corrective actions when necessary.
- Conduct open and closed chart reviews and medical record audits.
- Monitor quality indicators and participate in data collection and evaluation.
- Ensure compliance with Universal Precautions and applicable infection prevention standards.
- Maintain a safe therapeutic environment for patients/residents, families, and staff.
- Participate in facility committees, including Infection Control, Pharmacy, Quality Improvement, Safety, and other committees as assigned.
- Ensure nursing equipment is properly maintained and that damaged equipment is removed from service and repaired or replaced.
Staff Education & Professional Development
- Identify staff educational and training needs.
- Assist with the development and implementation of nursing education programs.
- Participate in facility orientation and management staff training as needed.
- Serve as a clinical resource, mentor, role model, and facilitator for nursing staff.
- Support student clinical affiliations and serve as a preceptor when appropriate.
- Maintain professional knowledge of current nursing practices, regulations, and healthcare standards.
Nursing Department Management
- Coordinate patient/resident care and ensure appropriate staffing levels.
- Recruit, select, appoint, and oversee licensed and non-licensed nursing personnel.
- Develop and maintain nursing staff schedules and on-call schedules.
- Conduct staff meetings and address employee performance and personnel issues.
- Provide counseling and performance feedback and coordinate performance evaluations with Human Resources.
- Resolve staff conflicts in accordance with facility policies.
- Monitor completion of required staff training and mandatory in-services.
- Evaluate clinical competencies and recommend improvements when necessary.
- Authorize overtime in accordance with facility guidelines.
- Direct nursing personnel during emergency situations.
- Manage controlled substances and narcotics in accordance with regulations and facility policies.
- Assist with development and management of the nursing services budget.
- Prepare monthly and annual reports for facility administration and/or the Board of Directors as requested.
- Communicate significant events, risk management concerns, and patient/resident care issues to facility leadership.
- Remain available for nursing department on-call responsibilities and work weekends/holidays as needed.
