Travel RN Job Details

- Healthcare Setting: Cardiac stepdown / neuro intermediate care, including PCU, DOU, and IMC-level care
- Shift Duration: 12-hour nights
- Shift Schedule: 6:45 p.m.–7:15 a.m.; 36 hours per week, with 48-hour options potentially available based on unit needs
- Patient Population: Adults and older adults requiring intermediate-level neurological and medical care
- Patient Ratio: Typically 1:4; weekend ratio approximately 1:3–4
- Unit Capacity: Up to 24 patients
- Call: None
- Weekend Requirement: At least three weekend shifts every six weeks
- Float: May include other intermediate-care and critical-care stepdown areas
- Orientation: 32 hours, including computer training and unit-based orientation
Travel Registered Nurse Job Requirements
- Active Registered Nurse license in North Carolina or a compact state; pending licensure may be considered for submission
- At least 2 years of recent acute-care RN experience
- Previous experience in neuro stepdown, PCU, DOU, IMC, cardiac stepdown, or telemetry required
- Previous travel nursing experience required; first-time travelers are not eligible for this assignment
- Current BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS certifications
- Recent Epic electronic health record experience required
- Ability to safely titrate norepinephrine and other vasoactive or cardiac infusions
- Strong telemetry skills, including interpretation and management of dysrhythmias and use of rapid response or code teams
- Demonstrated experience with neuro patients, including CVA, intracranial bleeds, aneurysms, craniotomy recovery, seizures, traumatic brain injury, lumbar drains, and post-TPA care
- Ability to complete specialty EKG testing before the assignment begins
- Excellent teamwork, communication, adaptability, and commitment to reliable attendance
- Additional experience with CCRN, TNCC, CPI, charge nursing, ports, phlebotomy, ICP monitoring, triage, or conscious sedation is welcome
Travel RN Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive nursing care for neurologically focused intermediate-care and medically complex patients
- Continuously assess patients, recognize changes in condition, and escalate concerns using appropriate rapid response and emergency protocols
- Interpret telemetry and dysrhythmias, manage cardiac monitoring, and administer or titrate cardiac, heparin, insulin, thrombolytic, and vasoactive medications according to protocol
- Care for patients before and after neurosurgery, including those with craniotomies, intracranial bleeds, aneurysms, spinal cord injuries, seizures, and traumatic brain injuries
- Manage respiratory support such as oxygen therapy, high-flow nasal cannula, BiPAP/CPAP, tracheostomy care, ventilated-patient care, chest tubes, and non-invasive airways
- Perform and document IV therapy, central and peripheral line care, PICC management, blood product administration, feeding tube care, surgical drain care, wound care, and continuous bladder irrigation
- Coordinate care with respiratory therapy, pharmacy, rehabilitation, radiology, IV services, rapid response teams, and other interdisciplinary partners
- Use Epic and established communication tools to maintain accurate documentation and support safe handoffs
- Float within the designated intermediate-care and stepdown areas as needed while maintaining high standards of patient safety and professionalism
