The Charge Nurse for the Progressive Care Unit (PCU) is a registered nurse who provides clinical leadership and oversight during assigned shifts. This role is responsible for coordinating patient care, supporting nursing staff, ensuring safe staffing and patient flow, and serving as a clinical resource while delivering high-quality, patient-centered care to moderately acute patients.
Key ResponsibilitiesClinical Leadership & CoordinationServe as the clinical leader for the PCU during assigned shifts
Coordinate patient admissions, transfers, and discharges
Assign patient care based on staff competency, acuity, and workload
Act as a resource for clinical decision-making and complex patient situations
Provide direct patient care as needed in accordance with scope of practice
Monitor patient status and intervene appropriately for changes in condition
Ensure compliance with evidence-based practices and hospital protocols
Promote patient safety, quality outcomes, and infection control standards
Provide guidance, mentoring, and support to nursing and support staff
Facilitate effective communication among interdisciplinary team members
Address staffing issues, conflict resolution, and workflow challenges
Participate in onboarding and precepting of new staff as needed
Ensure appropriate staffing levels and resource utilization
Communicate with nursing leadership regarding unit needs and concerns
Assist with audits, quality improvement initiatives, and documentation compliance
Ensure unit readiness for regulatory and accreditation standards
