Observes, assesses, and records symptoms, reactions, and progress of patients. Makes nursing rounds, takes and records vital signs, prepares and administers prescribed medications and treatment plans, and monitors patients in restraints on a timely basis. Provides immediate medical attention in emergencies, including administering first aid and coordinating transportation to a hospital if necessary. If assigned, schedules, assigns, and reviews work of lower-level staff, including approving or disapproving leave requests and completing performance evaluations. Participates in staff development and education, reviews care plans written by staff, and trains and orients new employees. Responsible for all health care of bedridden patients, including making rounds, evaluating care needs, developing care plans, administering medication, and providing direct nursing care. Performs specialized procedures such as IV therapy, wound care, oxygen therapy, dialysis, and blood transfusion. Organizes and oversees emergency response teams and directs healthcare staff assigned to the area. Acts as the lead worker in charge in the absence of a higher-level nurse and assists physicians with diagnostic evaluations. Performs clerical tasks including charting medications and treatments, completing required reports, and maintaining inventory of controlled substances. Arranges outpatient clinic appointments and medical examinations, and manages prescription orders. Conducts and participates in meetings and serves as a member or leader of problem-solving teams.
