Description:
The Registered Nurse (RN) plans and provides comprehensive nursing care.
This includes executing Licensed Independent Provider orders, dispensing and administering medications, and assisting in examinations and treatment of patients.
The RN applies nursing and supervisory techniques required in the care, treatment, and referrals of individuals.
Technical and clinical procedures are performed within the scope of education and licensure.
Nursing skills are applied in the care and treatment of individuals.
The RN attends sick call with the physician to see individuals and prepares a list of individuals to be examined.
Preparation of the examining room and equipment is required.
The RN operates pill call, dispenses medication, and documents as required by applicable policies and procedures.
The RN calls Licensed Independent Providers for medication and treatment orders and notifies them of emergencies.
Examinations and assessments are conducted for new individuals with illnesses or injuries.
Referrals to emergency rooms or other appropriate healthcare facilities are made as required by their condition.
Emergency procedures are performed as needed, and Licensed Independent Providers are notified for treatment orders.
The RN assists in coordinating professional medical services provided by contract personnel.
Monitoring of inpatient hospitalizations for early releases is done whenever appropriate.
The RN provides guidance and supervision of nursing care provided by licensed vocational/practical nursing staff and non-licensed medical staff.
A good working relationship with facility staff, nursing staff, contract providers, and outside provider agencies is maintained.
Established corporate, facility, and correctional policies and procedures are utilized in decision-making.
Evaluation of the provision of medical services is conducted to prevent inappropriate use or duplication of services.
Absolute security and confidentiality of all medical records are maintained.
The RN assists in reviewing medical files to ensure all provided services are documented.
All potential catastrophic illnesses are closely monitored.
Pharmacy use is audited for adherence to formulary as required.
Compliance with pharmacy laws, especially those covering controlled substances, is ensured.
Behavior of individuals is observed and recorded.
The medical unit is inspected for items that could be used as contraband.
Health counseling and education are provided on an individual or group basis as required.
Records, reports, and logs are prepared and maintained in a timely manner, using appropriate grammar.
Medical and technical procedures, governmental regulations, and legal documents are read, analyzed, comprehended, and interpreted.
The RN reviews and processes lawsuits and attends court hearings when necessary.
Facilitating accreditation of the medical program by providing the required level of efficiency and approved medical services is part of the role.
Safety and accident reports are prepared and disseminated as required by policies and procedures.
Appropriate action is taken in cases of serious and unusual incidents and emergencies.
