This includes executing Licensed Independent Provider orders, dispensing and administering medications, and assisting Licensed Independent Providers in examinations and treatment of patients. The RN applies nursing and supervisory techniques required in the care, treatment, and referrals of inmates/residents. The RN performs all technical and clinical procedures within the scope of their education and licensure. Nursing skills are applied in the care and treatment of inmates/residents. The RN attends sick call with the physician to see inmates/residents. The RN prepares a list of inmates/residents to be examined and prepares the examining room and equipment. Responsibilities include operating pill call, dispensing medication, and documenting as required by applicable policies. The RN will call the Licensed Independent Providers for medication and treatment orders, or for other emergencies. New inmates/residents with illnesses or injuries are examined and assessed, and referrals to emergency rooms or other appropriate healthcare facilities are made as required. Emergency procedures are performed as needed, and the Licensed Independent Provider is notified for treatment orders. The RN assists in coordinating professional medical services provided by contract personnel and ensures that their needs are addressed. Duties include monitoring inmate/resident inpatient hospitalizations for early releases whenever appropriate. The RN will provide guidance, supervision, and monitoring of nursing care provided by licensed vocational/practical nursing staff and non-licensed medical staff. Maintaining a good working relationship with facility staff, nursing staff, contract providers, and outside provider agencies is essential. The RN utilizes established corporate and facility policies and procedures in decision-making while using sound independent judgment. Regular evaluations of the provision of medical services to prevent inappropriate use or duplication of those services are conducted. Maintaining absolute security and confidentiality of all medical records is required. The RN assists with the review of medical files to ensure that all provided services are documented. Closely monitoring all potential catastrophic illnesses is expected. The RN audits pharmacy use for adherence to policy, as directed or required. Compliance with all applicable pharmacy laws, particularly those covering controlled substances, is mandatory. Inmate/resident behavior is observed and recorded. The medical unit is inspected for items that could be used as contraband by inmates/residents. Health counseling and health education are provided on an individual or group basis as required. Assistance is given in preparing and maintaining a variety of standard narrative, statistical, summary, and operational records. Medical and technical procedures, governmental regulations, legal, and non-legal documents are read, analyzed, comprehended, and interpreted. Processing and responding to lawsuits, as well as attending court hearings when necessary, are part of the responsibilities. The RN facilitates the accreditation of the medical program by providing the required level of efficiency and approved medical services. Safety and accident reports are prepared and disseminated as required. Appropriate action is taken in cases of serious and unusual incidents and emergencies.
