Duration: 3+ Months  to Long-term

Shift Timing: 2 pm-12 am or 2 pm-2 am (10-12-hour shifts - Must be flexible with shift/hours and days as it could change due to the needs of the facility).

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Provides professional nursing care to students in student health services units, inmates, juvenile offenders, or consumers in state-operated facilities/institutions.
  • Observes, assesses, and records symptoms, reactions, and progress of infirmary patients and clinic outpatients.
  • Conducts nursing rounds and takes and records vital signs.
  • Prepares and administers prescribed medications, narcotics, immunizations, and ordered treatment plans.
  • Monitors restrained patients (e.g., lock-ups, detention, isolation) at required intervals (e.g., every 15 minutes).
  • Responds to medical emergencies by administering first aid, arranging transport to emergency rooms, contacting physicians, and providing medical referrals.
  • Develops, implements, and reviews patient care plans.
  • Provides direct nursing care for 20–60 bedridden inmates in a corrections medical center setting.
  • Performs specialized procedures, including IV therapy, Chemotherapy, Wound care, Oxygen therapy, Dialysis, Blood transfusions, Intubation, CPR, Tube feeding, Catheterization, Suctioning, and Phlebotomy.
  • Organizes and oversees “Code Blue” emergency response teams.
  • Directs and supervises health care staff (e.g., hospital aides, LPNs); acts as lead worker during assigned shifts.
  • Schedules, assigns, and reviews work of lower-level staff (e.g., RNs, LPNs); may approve/disapprove leave and complete performance evaluations.
  • Participates in staff development, education, and training; orients new employees.
  • Assists physicians with diagnostic health evaluations.
  • Maintains accurate documentation of medications, treatments, and medical information.
  • Completes incident, accident, and Medicaid reports.
  • Orders and maintains inventory of supplies, equipment, and controlled substances.
  • Arranges outpatient clinic appointments, medical examinations, and prescription refills.
  • Performs administrative duties and serves as liaison within the organization.
  • Conducts or attends meetings; serves as instructor when needed.
  • Participates in or leads problem-solving teams and committees.
