Job Description – Registered Nurse (RN) – Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (PCICU)

Facility: Strong Memorial Hospital

Position Summary:

Strong Memorial Hospital is seeking an experienced Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (PCICU) Registered Nurse (RN) to provide specialized, high-acuity nursing care for critically ill infants, children, and adolescents with congenital and acquired cardiac conditions. The RN will collaborate with pediatric cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, intensivists, respiratory therapists, and multidisciplinary healthcare teams to deliver comprehensive critical care. Candidates must have recent Pediatric Cardiac ICU experience, telemetry experience, and current BLS, PALS, ACLS, and NIHSS certifications.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide comprehensive nursing care to critically ill pediatric cardiac patients in the Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (PCICU).
  • Perform detailed patient assessments and continuously monitor cardiac, respiratory, neurological, and hemodynamic status.
  • Care for patients before and after congenital heart surgery, cardiac catheterization, and other complex cardiovascular procedures.
  • Monitor and interpret telemetry, ECG rhythms, invasive hemodynamic monitoring, arterial lines, central venous lines, and other advanced monitoring systems.
  • Recognize and respond promptly to life-threatening changes in patient condition, including arrhythmias, respiratory failure, cardiac arrest, and neurological emergencies.
  • Administer medications, vasoactive infusions, blood products, and intravenous therapies according to physician orders and critical care protocols.
  • Manage ventilated patients and collaborate with respiratory therapists to optimize respiratory support.
  • Perform emergency interventions, including PALS and ACLS protocols, during pediatric cardiac emergencies.
  • Conduct ongoing neurological assessments in accordance with NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) guidelines when indicated.
  • Collaborate closely with pediatric cardiologists, intensivists, surgeons, pharmacists, and other healthcare professionals to develop and implement individualized care plans.
  • Educate patients' families regarding treatment plans, medications, post-operative care, and discharge instructions while providing emotional support.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of nursing assessments, interventions, medications, and patient responses in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
  • Ensure compliance with infection prevention standards, hospital policies, Joint Commission requirements, and evidence-based critical care practices.
  • Participate in rapid response events, code situations, quality improvement initiatives, and continuing education programs.
  • Mentor and support new nursing staff and participate in departmental orientation as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Graduate of an accredited Registered Nursing program.
  • Current, active Registered Nurse (RN) license.
  • Minimum of 2 years of recent Pediatric Cardiac ICU experience.
  • Telemetry experience – Required.
  • Current BLS, PALS, ACLS, and NIHSS certifications.

Schedule

  • Day/Evening/Night (D/E/N) rotation
  • Weekend, holiday, and on-call responsibilities may be required based on unit needs.
