  • Position: Emergency Department Registered Nurse (ED RN)
  • Shift Duration: 12-hour night shifts
  • Schedule: 7:30 p.m.–8:00 a.m.; 3 shifts per week
  • Weekend/Holiday Schedule: Every other weekend and major holidays required
  • Patient Population: Neonates, infants, children, adolescents, and adults with a variety of medical complaints
  • Department Features: 30-bed ED with 14 fast-track beds and additional hallway beds as needed
  • Clinical Support: Respiratory therapy, patient care technicians, phlebotomy, emergency department technicians, unit secretary, 24/7 charge nurse, and on-site physician coverage

Emergency Department RN Job Requirements

  • Current Registered Nurse license in the working state or eligibility through a compact license
  • At least 1 year of Registered Nurse experience
  • Recent Emergency Department or ED RN experience required
  • Experience with conscious sedation required
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification required
  • CPI or de-escalation training required
  • Ability to successfully complete an EKG examination during orientation
  • Emergency or critical care nursing experience preferred
  • EPIC electronic health record experience preferred
  • Copy of nursing diploma required
  • Ability to remain calm, adaptable, and clinically focused in a fast-paced emergency care setting

Emergency Department Registered Nurse Responsibilities

  • Perform initial and ongoing nursing assessments for patients with conditions ranging from non-urgent concerns to life-threatening emergencies.
  • Develop, implement, prioritize, and evaluate individualized plans of care using the nursing process.
  • Provide safe medication administration and evidence-based emergency nursing interventions.
  • Triage and prioritize patients of all ages according to acuity, clinical presentation, and available resources.
  • Deliver care related to medical illness, injury, trauma, pediatric needs, behavioral health concerns, women’s health, and resuscitation.
  • Recognize changes in patient condition and respond promptly with stabilization, crisis intervention, and escalation of care.
  • Collaborate with physicians, advanced practice clinicians, respiratory therapists, technicians, support staff, outside agencies, and other members of the interdisciplinary healthcare team.
  • Assist with emergency procedures and use department equipment, including infusion pumps, ventilators, automated CPR devices, video laryngoscopy equipment, ultrasound, EKG machines, bladder scanners, and cast cutters.
  • Educate patients and families while providing compassionate, culturally responsive, and relationship-based care.
  • Protect patient privacy, follow infection-control practices, and promote a safe environment for patients, families, and team members.
  • Participate in quality improvement activities and maintain professional accountability through ongoing education and competency development.
