Job Description

Job Title: Emergency Department Registered Nurse Profession: Registered Nurse Specialty: Emergency Duration: 27 weeks Shift: Day/Night Rotation Hours per Shift: 12 hours Experience: Minimum of 2 years in emergency department acute hospital setting License: Active Registered Nurse Licensure Certifications: BLS, ACLS, PALS, Stroke Certification (AHA or RQI only) Must-Have: Two years of emergency department acute hospital experience as a registered professional nurse Description: The Emergency Department Registered Nurse applies knowledge of nursing theory, technical skills, and communication skills in delivering high-quality, compassionate care to patients and families. The ED RN assesses patient needs, identifies urgent or emergent care priorities, and collaboratively provides direct care. They apply appropriate interventions and evaluate patient progress. The ED RN demonstrates skill in the use of various invasive and non-invasive procedures, treatments, and therapeutic interventions. These are necessary to manage life-threatening and routine emergency situations. The ED RN utilizes the principles of relationship-based care to alleviate anxiety, provide information, and address pain and safety concerns. They assess the physiological, psychosocial, emotional, and cultural needs of patients of all age groups and their families. The ED RN establishes rapport with patients and families during triage by addressing comfort needs, listening carefully, and providing frequent updates. They conduct a primary assessment of critical needs and accurately document any major deviations from the norm within acceptable time frames. The RN correctly identifies necessary steps and interventions required and uses various methods to conduct a secondary assessment. The ED RN assesses the psychosocial needs of each individual and documents any suspicion of domestic violence or abuse. They re-assess patients to identify their response to treatment and changes in condition, responding appropriately. The RN encourages and builds mutual trust, respect, and cooperation among team members to achieve optimal patient outcomes. They teach others as appropriate and delegate tasks consistent with each individual’s education, training, and scope of practice. The ED RN recognizes personal responsibility to ensure public safety through compliance with infection prevention strategies. They prepare patients and their families for diagnostic procedures and treatments and make appropriate referrals for post-emergency care. The RN teaches patients what is needed for continued care at home and assesses their learning styles. They structure education sessions to maximize understanding and evaluate retention of key points. The ED RN seeks to understand what is most important to patients and families. They acknowledge that patients and families are the central focus of all care and services. The RN embraces the importance of creating a healing environment as a key element of professional nursing practice. They keep patients and significant others informed of the process of care and anticipate their needs. The ED RN maintains awareness of the patient's condition throughout the emergency department visit and updates communication boards as necessary.
