The ED RN assesses patient needs, identifies the urgent or emergent care priority, and collaboratively provides direct care. They apply appropriate interventions and evaluate patient progress. The ED RN evidences skill in the use of various invasive and non-invasive procedures, treatments, and therapeutic interventions. They manage life-threatening and routine emergency situations effectively. The ED RN utilizes the principles of relationship-based care to alleviate anxiety, provide information, and address pain/discomfort and safety. They assess the physiological, psychosocial, emotional, and cultural needs of patients of all age groups, their families, and support systems. They connect with patients and families during triage, identifying the initial management of patients and assigning priority of care according to Triage Standards. The ED RN establishes rapport, addresses comfort needs, listens carefully, and assesses nonverbal communication. They provide frequent updates to patients and families. The RN conducts primary assessments of critical needs and documents any major deviations from norms for all age groups. They identify necessary steps and interventions required based on direct observation and assessments. The ED RN detects contributing factors, health histories, and events preceding the emergent health event. They assess and document psychosocial needs, including family dynamics and any suspicion of domestic violence or abuse. The RN reassesses patients to identify responses to treatment and changes in condition, responding appropriately as needed. They encourage and build mutual trust, respect, and cooperation among team members to achieve the best possible patient outcomes. The ED RN teaches others as appropriate and delegates tasks consistent with individual education, training, and scope of practice. They understand personal responsibility to safeguard public safety through compliance with infection prevention strategies. The RN prepares patients and families for diagnostic procedures and treatments. They make referrals for post-emergency care as needed. The ED RN educates patients on continuing care and healing at home. They assess patient/family learning styles and structure education sessions for maximum understanding. The RN evaluates retention of key points during education and discharge instruction. They seek to understand what is most important to the patient and family, acknowledging them as the central focus of care.
