Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: RN Specialty: Emergency Room Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12 Hours Nights Hours per Shift: 36 hours per week Experience: 2 years of recent Emergency Department experience License: Required Certifications: BLS, ACLS, PALS, NIHSS; TNCC and ENPC preferred Must-Have: IV skills, EKG rhythm interpretation Description: Unit has 26 beds and 3 trauma bays. There is a fast track treatment area with 4 beds. No separate triage area exists; travelers will triage patients within the department. ER holds are intermixed within the ER, and nurses care for those patients. Occasionally, a resource nurse may assist, but most of the time it is the ED nurse. There is one designated lower ligature risk room with a camera for psych patients. In-house security is available 24/7, located just outside the ED, consisting of law enforcement officers. The unit sees about 60 patients per day with a nurse-to-patient ratio of 1 to 4. UDN requires certifications in BLS, ACLS, PALS, NIHSS, with a preference for TNCC and ENPC. Common diagnoses include abdominal pain, altered mental status, STEMI (sent out), stroke, and chest pain. Patient demographics range from pediatric to geriatric, including COVID, shortness of breath, and moderate sedation cases. ED physicians and mid-level practitioners include MDs, DOs, PAs, and NPs. Charge nurses are present 24/7 and take patients. A house supervisor is available from 6 PM to 6 AM on weekdays and 24/7 on holidays and weekends. Nurse aides, paramedics, and patient sitters assist; medics handle EKGs, IVs, medication administration, and transport. The electronic medical record system used is Cerner. Respiratory Therapy is available in-house 24/7; they assist with breathing treatments, ABGs, and intubations. Nurses monitor telemetry and read strips. X-ray and CT services are close to the ER, and staff typically transport unless critical. Nursing staff performs 90% of blood draws, with lab assistance if needed. The schedule includes 12-hour shifts, with a 6-week cycle allowing staff to self-schedule under management supervision. Every third weekend is required for work. Flexibility to work on holidays may be needed. There is no call or standby requirement. Floating may occur, typically to patient sitter roles. Scrubs should be navy blue, with policies on facial piercings and tattoos in place. Unit-specific orientation involves 1-2 shifts with a preceptor. Requests for time off must be submitted upfront. Punctuality is essential, and commitment to fulfilling the contract is expected. Two shifts may be canceled per 13-week contract.
