Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: Nursing Specialty: Emergency Department Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12H Nights Hours per Shift: 36 hours per week Experience: Minimum 2 years License: Required Certifications: ACLS, PALS, TNCC Must-Have: Emergency Department experience, conscious sedation, critical thinking, AMI management Description: The emergency department is a trauma level 4 facility. It has 24 beds, 4 critical rooms, and 1 trauma room. An intake model is used for lower acuity patients with flexible RN to patient ratios. There is a separate triage area, and travelers with demonstrated ability may perform triage. ER holds are managed within the department. Two well-equipped psych/seclusion rooms are available. Security is in-house 24/7, with one stationed in the emergency department and one roving on campus at all times. The department treats an average of 80-110 patients per day. The nurse to patient ratio is 1:4 for general emergency care, with 1:2 or 1:1 ratios in the ICU based on acuity. A charge nurse and house supervisor are present 24/7. The charge nurse does not take an assignment in general. There are emergency department techs on a 1:10-12 ratio, who hold skills in IV therapy, phlebotomy, splinting, wound care, transport, and assistance with special procedures. Paramedics are staffed one per day, serving in both an emergency department tech role and administering 12 medications. Respiratory therapy is available 24/7 for intubation, vent setup, and urgent treatments. Nurses may start breathing treatments if urgent needs arise. All beds have telemetry monitor capability, and nurses read their own ECG strips. Radiology services are adjacent, with both portable x-ray and CT available. Lab draws may be performed by either phlebotomy staff or nursing staff depending on the situation. Self-scheduling is not employed; block scheduling options are available with a maximum of 4 consecutive shifts. Weekend requirements include every other weekend, with specific shift patterns. Holiday requirements are negotiable, with an expectation to work some major holidays. Call requirements include one on-call shift in a 28-day schedule. Floating to other emergency department areas is expected but typically pre-scheduled. Scrub color for this position is navy blue dignity scrubs. Orientation includes two days of hospital orientation followed by mentoring shifts in both emergency department areas. A cancellation policy allows for up to 4 shifts to be canceled per contract. Charting is done using a designated electronic health record system.
