Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: Nursing Specialty: Emergency Department Duration: 13 Weeks Shift: 12-Hour Nights Hours per Shift: 36 hours per week Experience: Minimum 2 years License: Required Certifications: ACLS, PALS, TNCC Must-Have: - 2 years of Emergency Department experience - Conscious sedation skills - Critical thinking skills - AMI management experience Description: The department is a Level 4 trauma facility. It has 24 beds, including 4 critical rooms and 1 trauma room. An intake model is used for lower acuity patients with flexible RN-to-patient ratios. There is a separate triage area, and travelers may triage if they have demonstrated the required skills. ED holds are mixed with other ER activities, and staff manage their own ED holds. The facility includes 2 well-equipped psychiatric and seclusion rooms. Security is in-house 24/7, with 1 stationed in the emergency department and 1 roving the campus. On average, the emergency department treats 80-110 patients per day. Nurse-to-patient ratios are 1:4 for general emergency department patients and 1:2 or 1:1 in the intensive care unit, depending on acuity. There is a charge nurse and house supervisor available 24/7; the charge nurse does not take an assignment in general. Emergency department technicians have a 1:10-12 ratio, performing various duties such as IV skills, phlebotomy, splinting, wound care, transport, and assistance with special procedures. Paramedics are staffed 1 per day during peak hours and can perform certain emergency department technician roles and discharge patients. Respiratory therapy is provided 24/7, with procedures such as intubation, vent setup, and ABGs managed by the respiratory team. Registered nurses may start breathing treatments if urgent. Portable X-ray and CT services are available in the emergency department, with transport managed by the respective teams. Both phlebotomy staff and registered nurses may draw labs, depending on the situation. Self-scheduling is not allowed; block scheduling may be arranged, but shifts cannot exceed 4 consecutive days. Weekend requirements include every other weekend and some major holidays are mandatory. There is a standby requirement with 1 on-call shift in a 28-day schedule. Registered nurses may be required to float between emergency departments as needed. The dress code includes navy blue scrubs. A department-specific orientation process is conducted, including hospital orientation and shadowing shifts with a mentor.
