The role requires completing accurate triage assessments on all patients and notifying the Emergency Medical Doctor of any abnormal signs, symptoms, and vital signs consistently. It involves reviewing and completing patient orders in a timely manner. Providing medication side effects teaching to all patients receiving medication in the Emergency Department is essential, along with including this information in discharge instructions. Recognizing the symptoms of cardiac or respiratory distress and other impending emergencies is critical. Appropriate nursing interventions must be provided in both stable and emergent patient situations. Competence in routine nursing skills is required, including medication administration and intravenous therapy, including blood products. Care and maintenance of indwelling catheters and drains, as well as the safe use of medical equipment used in critical care settings, must be demonstrated. Understanding and following the chain of command as per policy is necessary. Accurate interpretation of ECG rhythms and managing care of patients during life-threatening emergencies is essential. Demonstrating knowledge of lead functions and application, as well as making recommendations for best patient monitoring based upon presentation, is required. Knowledge and skill in providing care during Code Blue, Code Stroke, Sepsis, and Trauma Activations must be demonstrated. Legible, accurate, and timely documentation of all nursing care provided, including evaluation of patients' responses to medications, treatments, and procedures, is required. Consistent performance of necessary unit-specific safety and quality control checks is essential. Facilitating safe and timely coordination and collaboration with inpatient units when admitting patients from the Emergency Department is necessary.
